I recently got an iPod nano at Staples and when I tried
setting it up today I found that it requires iTunes
version 10 or later and when I tried downloading
iTunes 10 from http://www.itunes.com/download
it said it required Mac OS 10.5 and I have Mac OS 10.4.
Is there any way around this or will I just have to
return the nano and get an iPod Classic?

You're right. From a google search of
ipod nano mac os x 10.4.11
it seems the only solution is to upgrade to Mac OS 10.5
so I will have to return the nano to Staples (the staff
member who I dealt with told me it should work with
older versions of iTunes and I didn't bother to look
at the system requirements in fine print on the box).

Hello
I have similar problem with iPhone..
Some apps are so big, that you have to connect to computer for download or
update.
Things went well for 8 months until a certain app requested I have to have
iTunes version 10. My Apple minimac has tiger and is not upgradable to
snowleperd nor iTunes 10 - it sticks to iTunes 8
So no fixing the issue without buying a new Mac - or ???????
Thanks God iTunes can be downloaded to any pc - and my cheap pc gladly
updates to latest iTunes - so I can connect my iPhony to that to keep things
running....
So much for mac-world superiority.

nope. any size app can be downloaded over wifi on the device itself.
the only limit is over the cellular network.

iphone apps do not care what version of itunes you have.

so upgrade it to leopard 10.5, and itunes 8 is *old*. at least update
that to 9.2.

see above.

Hello
This is not a troll
I got me the minimac after I bought the iPhone - I was so pleased with it -
still am , absolutely no going back to Nokia - that I decided to look into
mac-world - so I got me a used minimac.
Yes I am impressed with the ease of installing system software and how
easily it got running. I use it mainly for internet next to my old
pc-laptop, which has all the programs I use at my work. I have not bought
any extra software, while I do not need anything at the moment.
Back to the issue discussed:
"
>
> nope. any size app can be downloaded over wifi on the device itself.

No wifi available - so cellular network or update via computer.
> iphone apps do not care what version of itunes you have.
I do not know - but I did get the message, that this particular update needs
to be loaded via iTunes 10 - the app is "Moon Gloge" - I have the option of
leaving the phone open overnight with powercable and I do have unlimited
internet use time - so I could have done that, but the phone uploaded
everything else and insisted on going via computer.
> so you already solved the problem?
Yes - I solved the problem and I thought that Mr David Dalton could try this
too in order to be able to keep his iPod Nano and enjoy it - surely there
must be oodles of pc:s around any mac-user - work - fellows - friend etc.
>
>> So much for mac-world superiority.
This line was put in merely, because for years we pc-users have heard from
mac-users, how superior mac is in just about everything - reason being
naturally, that software and hardware come mostly from one place and
therefore are so compatible. In pc-world there is a next to impossible
jungle out there. My solution with pc is imple: have a separate machine, if
the job is important ( I have two multitrack sound recorders on pc - 32
simultaneous inputs and outputs - I would not even think to connect that in
internet or update anything )
This machine here on my desk is a "letīs do everything with it" and has
problems occasionally
> so much for a poor attempt at a troll.
Hope to have convinced you, that originally my intension was only to help
David and anybody else with same problem.

a wifi base station is cheap, certainly much cheaper than a new
computer.

updating the firmware on the phone may require a later version of
itunes (depends which firmware). that's it.
itunes doesn't care what the app is, only that it's a valid iphone app,
and then it will copy the app to the phone.
however, the *app* might require a later firmware on the phone to run,
and if so, itunes won't copy the app until you update the phone's
firmware. as i said, updating the phone's firmware is what needs a
later version of itunes.
you mentioned you're running itunes 8, which is really old. itunes 9.2
might be sufficient to support the firmware you need to install to run
the app. i think itunes 9.2 still runs in 10.4.

this has nothing to do with superiority. you just need to update some
software.

sounds like it's a powerpc mac mini, which will run 10.5 leopard, but
not 10.6 snow leopard. >> Stay informed about: iPod/iTunes problem |

It's called a "Mac mini" - just for future reference. ; )

We still don't know which Mac mini you have - there are several models.
It may be that you can upgrade your operating system and iTunes.
If you click the Apple menu at the top-left of the screen and choose
About This Mac, what does it same for "Processor" and "Memory"?

I think his point was that most people do have WiFi available, so a
computer is not required.

Or, assuming that the MacMini is plugged into the internet (ie. via
ethernet cable to a cable modem or equiv.), the Mini may provide
a local wifi network. Look at Prefs->Sharing->Internet Sharing.
(Not sure about finding the pref under earlier OS than 10.6,
but I'm pretty certain it's there.)

Your English is fine. If some nuance comes out wrong, don't be
surprised if folks make the incorrect assumption that you may
be trolling - it's not your fault, but there are a lot of folks
who do, in fact, repeatedly troll the mac groups and waste all
of our time. Welcome to the group.

My MacMini data
OS X 10.4.11
Processor 1,42GHz PowerPC G4 (1,2)
1 Gt DDR SDRAM
PowerMac 10.1
??speed 167MHz
Boot rom 4.8.9f4
With this data they told me at Mac-shop my machine is not upgradable - so if
any of you knows it can be done and shares the information, Iīd be very
gratefull.

All looking good so far.
There is one other issue: 10.5 probably needs more disk space than 10.4
once it is installed, and you will need additional free space to do the
installation.
What is the capacity of the hard drive, and how much free disk space
does it have? (You can find out by clicking on the icon of the hard
drive, and using the "Get Info" command in the File menu.)
If you have at least 10 GB free you are probably OK, but more would be
better.
> With this data they told me at Mac-shop my machine is not upgradable - so if

What they were probably trying to tell you was that your computer is not
able to be upgraded to the version of Mac OS X which Apple is currently
selling as a retail product (10.6).
Your Mac Mini can certainly be upgraded to Mac OS X 10.5 (assuming you
have enough disk space). That will allow you to run iTunes 10, which
will let you use the current iPod, iPhone and iPad models and upgrade
them to the latest iOS version.
The question then is how to get hold of a copy of 10.5. You might be
able to find a second-hand copy (e.g. via eBay), but this tends to be
unreasonably expensive and you need to make sure you get the right
variant (the retail "Install" DVD, not a model-specific version, not an
"Upgrade" version, not a "Server" version).
One option may be to contact Apple Customer Relations, who should be
able to arrange supplying a copy of Mac OS X 10.5 once you explain your
situation. You will probably have to pay the normal retail price for it
(US$129).
