Given that I couldn't find a newsgroup that centers on iPods I chose to post
my question here.

On my iPod touch when I select an album or playlist I cannot disable the
shuffle mode. What do I need to do to have the songs played in order?

I have the opposite problem. I select "shuffle" from within iTunes,
but the same songs show up on my iPod.

Do you have "shuffle" turned off for those playlists? I didn't even
know there was an option to change order of songs within an album.

According to the instruction manual the shuffle icon in the playlist should
change color to indicate whether or not it is on or off. In my case the color
doesn't change.

I've made a genius bar appointment to discuss the problem and will report the
results here.

I wouldn't be surprised if something is write-protected.

it turns out that I misread the instructions! (shame, shame, shame) If I have
a playlist active and an album cover is being displayed, a tap on the screen
will bring up and additional control panel, and in that panel is the click
point which will turn on and off the shuffling.
