Not directly. You would need to burn them to a CD first, then reimport
the song from the CD. This will result in (probably noticeable) quality
loss. Songs purchased from the iTMS are "protected" (.m4p) files with
Digital Rights Management encoded into them.

You can but with even more loss of fidelity - much more than you get when you
go from WAV/AIFF to MP3. Unless you absolutely need MP3, leave well enough
alone.

Burning and ripping as MP3 should sound any worse than just transcoding
from AAC to MP3.

Of course, if you don't have a WAV/AIFF, then you make do with what you
have.
I've had to do the same thing (burn/rip to MP3) in order to make MP3 CDs
that I can play in the car.

Aside from the fact that (as I understand it) MP3 CDs can hold more
music than the usual audio format, is there any other advantage to this
format for use in the car? I ask so that I can pass on any useful
wisdom to my daughter, who just got a new unit installed in her car.

I don't know if I would call it an "advantage," but you're far less
likely to notice an MP3's quality difference from CD-DA in a car, due
to the ambient noise and generally lower speaker quality than that
found in a home/studio.

You can put all the music you ever want to listen to on one MP3 CD. You
can only put about an hour of music on an audio cd, and only about 18
minutes if you're just a greedy well-known rock band.

I'll pass that along to her, since I'm sure she'd like to be able to put
more music on a CD for her driving pleasure.

In her case, she listens to music at home on her iMac (a 1GHz G4 model)
with the speakers that shipped with it, and has old (and probably
not-so-good quality) speakers in her car. So I doubt this will make
much difference to her. Sounds like she'd be happier with MP3 CDs in
the car.

The higher capacity is the main reason for MP3 CDs in the car.
With 6-10 hours of music on a disc, I only need to make one mix-CD for
an entire weekend road trip.
The sound quality is inferior to the original CDs, but I rarely notice,
due to the road and wind noise from the car's motion.

The new unit will of course have to be capable of playing .mp3, which
not all units can. T-L >> Stay informed about: iTunes Convert to mp3? |

It sounds like a good solution for her. Before iPods were all the rage,
I traveled in Europe with a portable CD player and 12 hours of
music...on a single MP3 CD. That may not seem like so much, but in the
90s I would travel with a cassette player and 3 or 4 tapes holding only
4-6 hours of music total, so the MP3 CD player seemed like a huge step
up in compactness and flexibility. MP3 CD is a great solution where
you're not in an audiophile environment and you don't have an iPod or a
connection for one.
Today I have the same 12 hour music capacity on a little iPod shuffle
that is routed through the tape player when in my old beater car. >> Stay informed about: iTunes Convert to mp3? |

I bought her the unit for a Christmas gift and know that it has this
capability. I just wasn't quite sure of any advantages using the MP3 CD
format versus burning an audio CD.
