Set up a smart playlist containing only tracks you want to be included.
You could filter based on genre, or whatever else works for you. Then
select that playlist and start random play.

Create a smart list that contains the music you DO want and play from
that.

Create a playlist, excluding the genres you don't want, and turn
on shuffle when playing that playlist.

A smart playlist might be the easiest way to set this up.

i see. i was hoping there was an Exclude flag, or star-rating i could
assign to don-play-music, that would automatically be excluded by a
random preferences pane.

the only problem w/ creating a playlist for what i *do* want, is that
by default i want everything i have (except known-exclusions),
including any fresh additions -- i dont want to have to constantly
edit the playlist to add recently added music. will Smart Playlists
accomplish this?

thanks

You can create a Smart Playlist which has the rule "Playlist is not
[some other playlist]".

You can then have a manual or smart playlist which contains songs you
want to exclude, and the first smart playlist will contain everything
but those songs.

This is exactly what smart lists are for.

Create a smart list.

Set your criteria.

I usually set mine to match all of the rules, then I set my rules up as:
- Not genre: Christmas
- Not genre: Books & Spoke
- Not genre: Comedy

etc, etc. (match all, of course)

If you want to do star ratings, you an set a rule My Rating > 2 stars.
You can even create a standard playlist called "Excluded" and add a
rule:
- Playlist not Excluded

Basically, set some basic rules. When you find they're not working,
expand them.
