I'd be amazed if anyone has done it ... smarter or not!

I wonder what percent of Apple Remotes get used at all. >> Stay informed about: iTunes rating using Apple Remote |

Handy when you have an iPod in a dock feeding your music system.
As far as rating my music ... I've never had the slightest inclination!

I rate them, and use the rating in smart lists. >> Stay informed about: iTunes rating using Apple Remote |

I like all my music ... and I might like certain music more on one
particular day, or in one mood. I rather like to rediscover my music
rather than focussing on my own top rated hits. It would be handy if
listening to lots of music for reviewing, but I don't need to do that.
The OP might be interested to check out an app called Remote Buddy
(which I only just heard about) which extends the functionality of the
Apple Remote.

It doesn't have to be "top rated". You don't even have to have 5
stars be better than 1 star. It can simply be an attribute that can
be used with smart lists.
I also like to be able to categorize "children's music" or "Christmas
music", but have some music that might fall in one or both of these
categories - which don't get excluded when Christmas season is over.
Analyzing for different types of smart lists can be interesting, and
being able to use the "rating" as a category of your own choosing can
be a tool to use. >> Stay informed about: iTunes rating using Apple Remote |

I would just put "Christmas" or "children" in the Comments field or
alternatively make a custom Genre for the Smart playlist to search. Are
you saying for example that you use 3 stars for "Christmas" and 4 stars
for "children's music"?

Actually, I have those keywords in comments. But I combine a few
characteristics to get a playlist that might include Nutcracker or
Messiah which are in my Christmas list - but not exclusively.
There are other ways of doing this, but rating has a characteristic
that comments don't have - they are visible and changeable from the
iPod.
Maybe rating can mean to you "I need to do something with this song".
You have a playlist of rated songs that works like the book stack next
to your bed. While you are out, you basically yellow-post-it that
song to remind you.
The point is, if you think outside of the box, there are other
possibilities with this flag. >> Stay informed about: iTunes rating using Apple Remote |

There are some songs I want to play when I play an album - but not
when I am playing just songs. I'd like to exclude them from "Music",
but the best I can do is not use "Music", but instead have a playlist
with everything except them. >> Stay informed about: iTunes rating using Apple Remote |

The iPod changeability is an interesting feature ... though I must admit
I've never taken advantage of it.

It's particularly handy when one has a long period of time to use and
manipulate the iPod. (i.e. long flight, trip, etc)
I have rated MOST of my music. Still, I have a Smart Playlist that reveals
ONLY those songs with NO rating. When I have the time, I'll listen to that
playlist and, using the iPod, RATE the songs.
The next time I sync the iPod, the new ratings are passed along to iTunes.
