Visio does not exist on the Mac platform, and Mac Office therefore does not
recognise Visio files. If you have an Intel Mac, you could run Windows and
Visio in Boot Camp, or through emulation software such as Parallels.
Alternatively, you could use OmniGraffle Pro, a Mac application which can
import Visio files and then convert them into other formats. If you don't
want to try any of these methods, ask the person who sent you this file to
save the file in a different format that can be read by Mac Office, such as
PNG for bitmap images or EPS for vector-based images.

The Visio object information is stored in the Word doc, but that isn't what
you're actually seeing. The content rendered on screen is a "representation"
of the object contained in the doc... Made possible by it having been
interpreted for Win Word when it was inserted into the file there.
Word is not a graphics program, so it can't open (read) image files. It
needs to use graphics filters & supporting applications to import
(interpret) graphics of various types. Since Visio is non-existent on the
Mac, Mac Word doesn't have that type of filter - Win Word does.

Hi,
Visio objects contain more information about the objects than Word, Excel
and PowerPoint know what to do with.
For example, a wall representation in Visio knows that it is a wall and what
kinds of things walls can have (doorways, windows, etc.).
When a Visio object is brought into Word it is displayed as a drawing
object. You can right-click a Visio object and turn it completely into a
drawing object, but that loses all other Visio information and from then on
it is not retrievable.
You can't import a Visio object as a Visio object, however, because Word was
never designed to treat them as Visio objects.
That said, if you would like to see this functionality added to Word,
there's a web site you can use to let Microsoft know your wish. It's
http://www.microsoft.com/mac/default.aspx?pid=feedback&lang=en&app=Word

Because Visio writes a WMF "Placeable Header" into its files.
Mac Word can find and render the WMF version. But it can't edit the
underlying Visio object that produced the WMF.
Sorry... As Corentin said, save it out of Visio in XML and Word will have a
better chance.
Cheers

I am confused...
Is there a version of word:mac that can display visio drawings in the word document? I do not need alteration capability, only to view it.
I have only tried this with word:mac 2001 (I admit) because that's what I have on this particular machine with me on a road trip. I have office:mac 2004 at home but wonder if that will work. With 2001, I see an empty frame where the visio drawing should be. If I click in the frame, I get a message to the effect of: Word cannot access the visio file... - or something like that.
Thanks for any help here.

Hi Jeff:
Every version of Mac Word will give you read-only access to Visio drawings.
However, the version of Word Mac needs to be the same year model as the
version of Visio. Word 2001 should be able to display Visio 2000 files, but
it will get embarrassed by Visio 2003 or later.
If the driver of Visio is you, you could save the files back to the Visio
2000 file format to make them visible on the Mac. But if you have to save
to a different format, for my money you would be better saving to one of the
Mac native formats such as PDF or EPS.
And the image is strictly read-only: Mac Word displays the WMF "preview"
that is included in a Visio image, not the image itself.
Hope this helps
