I've been waiting for this game a long time and would love to play it but an
amazon.com review says the system requirements are just insane. My 5 month old
eMac might not cut it and that would be crushing. What have people been playing
it on? How does it play? Are the high system req. something a patch might fix?
Thanx,
B

I just finished playing AVP2 on an original eMac (700 MHz) with 1024 MB
memory and running 10.2.6. I ran at 640x480 with the video settings at
the medium setting with chrome reflections turned off.

The game is very playable for the most part.

At times the game is frustratingly unplayable. Specifically: always when
there are strobing lights (not too often), sometimes in areas with steaming
vents (lots of these in the game), certainly on a couple levels in very
large open areas, and a few other spots.

The game suffers from a similar problem I had with Jedi Outcast. That is,
after playing for a while the game starts to bog down to the point where
it's so choppy it's not playable. You have to exit the game, restart it,
reload, and the game is playable again. Annoying but workable.

Crappy input response is my main complaint with the game. When the game
bogs down it starts to overinterpret input movements and exaggerate them.
A short movement blasts you at a furious speed across the room, much faster
than you can walk or run in the game (you keep going and can't stop until
you hit something). It makes fine aiming or even turning down a hallyway
impossible. There's some seriously lousy input (mouse and keyboard) code
in this game.

The ability to turn off strobing lights and steam effects in the graphics
options would've helped a lot. Restarting the game helps when it starts
to bog down. I turned down the graphics options at times to get through
a choppy part of a level and then put them back. Cheating with god mode
is also an option if your FPS drops too low to target properly.

The game box states a 700 MHz G4 with 256 MB is the minimum requirement
and 800 MHz G4 with 517 MB (yes it says 517) as the recommended system.
On faster systems than mine I'm sure the gameplay is better. Maxing out
your memory will probably improve performance.

I'm not sure the game's worth $50. I was a bit disappointed. I guess I
was expecting a bigger graphical leap in the game engine for this sequel.
I think the game's graphics shows their age against other recent Mac titles
(MOHAA and Jedi Outcast are much better looking games). If you can find it
for under $50 then buy it. Otherwise I'd say it can wait.

I have a G4 Cube upgraded to 1ghz with the 32MB Radeon that came with
it. The performance is acceptable to me, but there's a lot of choppiness
with the lighting, and it's most noticeable to me when I turn my
flashlight on (which you have to do constantly, being it's in the
Aliens/Predator universe of dark hallways etc.). This lighting thing
sometimes (not that often) actually causes the game to pause on me, for
just a second, but it's pretty annoying.

However, these are not deal-breakers for me because I like the
atmosphere a lot, it's even better than the first one, for me. The first
level (for human) goes on and on with nothing happening, and then when
the poop hits the fan, it really makes the tension rise. I love the
suspense.

I got it for $40 at Compusa, I think it's a sale this week? Not sure
about that, but at that price it's worth it I think.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

Will there be a demo for this game?

Are the problems you mentioned about the lighting something that a patch can
fix or are they something we will have to live with?

If not, that would really bite. They've had, what? 18 months? 2 years since the
original came out? Why are the requirements so insane on the Mac side? The PC
requirements were serious but not debilitating.

I could play it on my wintel but want to support Mac gaming whenever possible
and was willing to wait. However, Mac game publishers now have to realize
they're not only competing with the less fun Microsoft OS, but also so really
kick ass consoles. Jedi Outcast may be better with a mouse and keyboard but if
it's not playable [or at least has serious slow down issues] on a recently
purchanced Mac, I'm going console.

Sigh...gripe, gripe, gripe...

Since my eMac is on the low end of the requirements I'm not sure the
problems I had would be common for must users. The cause might not be
a code bug but underpowered hardware (despite the minimum requirements
on the box). I'd be interested to hear if anyone else has the problems
I had.

Most FPS games usually allow you to disable fog/smoke effects (AVP@ does
not). Since the strobe light/steam effects are mostly there for "creepy
mood" I'm not sure if a patch would let you turn them off. The flickering
strobe lights are the worst since they consistently bog the game down every
time (thankfully they aren't that common in the levels).

I have a 867Mhx 17" iMac with 784 MB RAM, and I can confirm that this
game maxes out my system. The flares and the shoulder lamp are what
really do it, which might not be so bad except that the EXTREMELY DARK
environments really beg for illumination.

Is there are "turn the lights on" cheat somewhere? Heh.

Man this is a creepy game. I just wish the Aliens wouldn't spawn
behind me. It really defeats the "go slow and paranoid" tactic which
SHOULD be profitable in such circumstances. That circumstances being
pitch dark Alien-encrusted sewer tunnels whose walls are covered with
implanted hosts. Whew.

Even with my Dual 1.2 GHz G4 and a Radeon 9800 Pro, there are some parts
where the game is slightly choppy, but my issues are mainly with
stability. I got really into the game one time and played for about an
hour without saving. I got to a part where I saw an alien grab one of
my buddies and pulled him into a pipe and then the game crashed. What
sucks is that Omni's CrashCatcher app never, ever seems to work
correctly. It freezes up and I have to force quit, which results in no
type of crash report whatsoever. So since that crash, I haven't played
AvP2 (I also have a bout 5 other games I'm playing frequently)<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->
