Need info on G5 XServe

I'll settle for rumours.

From what little I've been able to glean it seems that the G5 XServes
might actually be ready to ship but are held up waiting for the server
version of Panther. Since Panther is shipping this Friday 10/24 I am
hoping that the XServes might be announced at the same time.

But then again, maybe Virginia Tech wouldn't have sprung for 1100
desktop G5's for their cluster if the XServes had been imminent ?

Decisions, decisions...

Keep in mind the XServe case is much more cramped than any of Apple's
desktop towers. And the current G5 puts out a lot of heat. It may run
silently with nine fans but it's no cube.

It's possible a G5 XServe may have to wait until next year when the 970
gets a smaller manufacturing process. Even if not, I get the sense it
may not show until the new year anyway.

Yes, I've heard various rumours that the height has increased from 1U to
2U or even 3U to accommodate the extra heat sinks, etc, needed for
cooling a pair of G5's. I've also heard that the G5 XServes are ready to
ship, but it seems unlikely that Apple would hold them back any longer
now that OS X 10.3 Server is actually shipping, so that may well have
been incorrect.

Maybe there will be an announcement at MW SF in Jan, but it now seems
unlikely we'll hear anything before then.
