Look for a folder named "Disk Images". Mine has a folder inside it called
"Mac OS 7.6".

The excellent Guru s/w confirms it has 2*30 pin sockets and 4MB on the
motherboard. Min speed 100nS, Max Ram 10MB.

Any version of system 7 will be fine. I would go for 7.5.5 (which can be
obtained free) with unecessary extensions/Control Panels disabled. 7.6.x
would be ok, but is very hard to find.

Read the Readmes. Anything that requires more than 16Mhz (or a 68040 or
PPC) is no good for you.

Personally I would not go to any trouble upgrading this unless you have
the necessary bits hanging around. If you want to change something I
would put a Performa/LC 475 motherboard in it.

my cd is 7.6.1, perhaps that's the difference.

A Mac Pro with two 3.2GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon processors (8-core) and
32GB of RAM.

Sometimes it was a real requirement because of the way the video was
being mapped to the screen and not just a lazily-written check.

Say, wasn't there a trick for getting into 16 color mode even after it
had been apparently removed? I can't remember what it was... option
key, maybe?

Check out www.lowendmac.com for info on your priceless antique.
Please realize that nothing made in the last decade will run on it, but
you can get legacy versions of Eudora (an email app) from
http://www.eudora.com, and Newswatcher (an nntp client), and numerous
other legacy mac apps from:
http://hyperarchive.lcs.mit.edu/HyperArchive.html, which is till
operating, in spite of being "officially" closed.

You can also still get system 7 from apple. I believe that's the newest
OS you'll be able to run. You'll need to find the link to it, which is
buried rather deeply. A shortcut is to go to wikipedia, and search for
system 7. Then scroll tot he bottom of the article, and follow the
appropriate links.

Somewhere on google groups, there is a stagnant development project for
machttp. That's a webserver that will run on your box. It's as much a
priceless antique as your box, but it was updated earlier this decade by
it's original author and friends, so you can even run a minimalist
webserver off of it.

It's a cool toy if you've never used a mac before. Do realize it's
closing in on it's 20th birthday, though.

Enjoy!

Joshua

Don't forget WordPerfect.

http://lowendmac.com/misc/010212.html

The download links are long since broken, but you can find it if you
look around. Since they released it for free, I've used it to make
useable systems out of 680x0 Macs running System 7.5.

You can use it to write a book, do your homework, and even do some
simple web pages. If you get a decent printer for your Mac, you can
use it for low end desktop publishing, the kind where you make up
a page on your Mac and take them to a copy shop and then stick them
up in your supermarket, etc.

You can also make up booklets, etc.

It's fairly big, so unless you have a larger hard drive than the
original and either a CD-ROM drive or ethernet to get it there
in the first place, I would not bother.

Geoff.

On my Quadra 630, I used Netpresenz, by Peter Lewis:

It's not on Google Groups. It's got its own domain:

<http://www.machttp.org/>

Only, it appears something happened to the site recently. Most of the
content is gone - hopefully not the result of malicious activity! This
is what it used to look like:

<http://web.archive.org/web/20060924123036/http://www.machttp.org/>

And here's the VersionTracker listing:

<http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macos/9856>

BTW, I run MacHTTP 24 hours a day, seven days a week on Zippy, my little
Mac SE/30:

<http://zippy.kicks-ass.org:9997>

It's quite a solid web server!

Since the LC style case probably does not have enough room for a
68pin-to-50pin converter, you're stuck with 18 GB disks.[*] I saw a data
sheet for a 36 GB disk with 50pin narrow SCSI from Seagate years back,
but never saw it on price lists. Anything narrow SCSI over 4 GB is
sought after, and expensive.

> Installed on it now is system 7.0.1, but is capable of running 7.6.1.

You have the slowest 68030 Mac that Apple ever produced. 7.5 will not be
much fun, especially with what limited memory options the LC II has. I'd
recommend either sticking with 7.0.1, or getting a 7.1 floppy set from
ebay. From what I've heard, 7.1 can selectively be extended with most of
the gimmicks that were introduced with 7.5.

> If I want to pick up some old games, what specifics should I look for?
> Am I wrong in assuming that anything on a floppy will run?

Hard to say. But since they shouldn't be too expensive, why not give it
a try (and report back)?

hauke

[*] I have a Quadra 650 here with a 36 GB Seagate Cheetah, so there's no
real limit disk-wise. Ahh, SCSI...
