First some clarification - What version of Excel are you using? Always a
good thing to mention:-)
If 2003, Control+Click the button, select Properties, then click Reset.
(This is assuming you *have* added the buttons to a toolbar - they aren't
there by default.) Should that not work, go to Tools> Customize> Customize
Toolbars/Menus, drag the buttons off the toolbar & replace them with new
ones from the commands on the Commands page of that same dialog.
If you actually mean Menu commands (Insert>Row, Insert>Column) click the
black triangle at the end of a toolbar, select Customize Toolbars/Menus & go
to the Toolbars page. Click the *name* of the Menu Bar, then click Reset.
If these suggestions don't help post back with details.
Re. keyboard shortcuts: Neither command has a shortcut assigned to it, but
in the Customize dialog you can click Keyboard & assign them. Instructions
are in Excel Help. Search using the keywords: customize shortcuts.

My 'insert row' and 'insert column' command buttons on the toolbar are
in a lighter shade, and don't appear to be available. I don't quite
understand why. The 'delete row' and 'delete column' command buttons
are fine. Any ideas as to why the 'insert row/column' buttons don't
work?
Also, does anyone know the control keys for insert/delete row/column?
thanks...
