install Office 2004 on my new mac - not as Test Drive

WARNING: If you "migrate" programs, do NOT migrate their preferences files
over :-)

Otherwise you will live in Crash City until you remove the preferences that
do not apply to the new computer.

This has been driving me crazy, too. I have followed this link but
it was not much help. I am a MacBookPro newbie and did the Test Drive
uninstall the other night before installing my purchased version. I
did not realize it was still telling the world that I am test driving
until this afternoon I have spent four hours trying to figure out how
to get beyond it. If I really do need to totally uninstalled all of
Office:mac how exactly do I preserve all of emails. Where do I find
them even??

Your mail is not touched when you use "Remove Office". Microsoft Entourage
installs the Microsoft User Data folder (MUD) in your User's Document
folder. Inside this folder is your Identity (named Main by default). All of
your mail, contacts, etc are stored here. If you move this folder, Entourage
will not know where your mail is located and will open with a new default
identity that will be blank.

When you backup, be sure your Identity folder is backed up. I suggest doing
this on a regular basis.

As far a getting rid of the Test Drive....just run "Remove Office" a few

Thank you Diane! I will try this in the morning when I am less likely
to mess things up.

Diane, It took 6 installs and uninstalls to finally remove the "test
drive" in front of my name. One of the installs I did as a drag and
drop. But then I could no longer find my old emails. I uninstalled
and used the wizard install. Now I can send emails without the "test
drive" however, I still can't get Entourage to see the previously
received emails. This despite my being able to find them with the
search in Finder. How do I move them back into Entourage?? I would
also like to migrate my Outlook Express email from my PC. Any
suggestions on that as well as that address book. I AM a Mac newbie.

How are you finding the emails? If it's with Spotlight, then they might be
searching the cache spotlight files. These are not completed messages. You
might be able to salvage data from these if you can't find the originals.

~/Library/Caches/Metadata/Microsoft/Entourage/ is the location of your
data used by Sync Services. It's not your actual database.

Your Identity folder [Identity name is Main by default] contains:

Database
Mailing Lists
Rules
Signature
(these are files that contain your data)

As I mentioned earlier in this thread:

Hopefully, you have not deleted the file. If you have deleted the trash,
it's gone. Sorry!

If you moved the folder...

Select Switch Identity under Entourage in the Menu bar and see if your old
identity is still listed. Just looking in the 2004 Identities folder will
also show you all Identities that are available.

If you have moved the MUD folder then in the Finder: To find your old
database, search for "Microsoft User Data" (without the quotes). If you only
find the one in your Documents folder then your data is gone. It's possible
you moved it and the search will show you the location.

If you have not used a new identity in Entourage, then copy the entire
Microsoft User Data folder to the correct location.

Fix if you have more than one Microsoft User Data Folder...

Move the entire identity folder you want to use to the Office Identities
folder that Entourage is recognizing. Your identity is named "Main" by
default. Be sure to rename one so you do not overwrite. Your identity folder
can contain more than one identity. Switch Identities to view your old mail.
If you have not used the new identity, delete it. If you have used it and
want to combine the new mail with your original database, drag each folder
to the desktop from one identity. This creates an MBOX file. Switch
identities. Drag the MBOX files into the folder window of Entourage.

You can delete the old Identity after you are satisfied with the transfer.

Not sure what Spotlight is but I found the emails with FInder. Under
"Kind" they are listed as "Microsoft Entourage Message Pointer if
that helps. Highlighting and trying to drag and drop doesn't seem to
work.

Unfortunately, those aren't the actual e-mails. They are "pointer" files
generated by Entourage and used by Spotlight so that the e-mails can be
searched in Spotlight. They don't actually include all of the information
associated with the e-mail; they only contain some key information for
searching purposes and a reference ID so that if the user opens the entry,
the full e-mail is accessed from the Entourage database and displayed in
Entourage.

As Diane said, you need to locate your Microsoft User Data folder and
identity folder and make sure it is located in the correct path on your
machine.

Since Entourage uses the special cache file for searching, be sure to add
your Identities folder to your Spotlight Exclude list in the System
Preference Panes. Drag the folder into the pane rather than use the + (add)
button.

You can "install" it. Don't "load" it, or you will get trouble!

Do a fresh install from the disk, then immediately apply ALL the updates
from 11.3.5 on up to the latest BEFORE starting any applications.

Some of the updates will install fixes specifically for OS 10.5.

After that, it will run well :-) If you try to "copy" it from a pre-OS 10.5
computer, it will be very sick indeed :-)

If it has never been used, you can just drag it to the trash, BUT if you
have opened it, you will have to use "Remove Office" often several times to
get rid of it. It's been a nightmare for many users to get rid of the damn
thing.
