Hi _ New to this group; if I'm just repeating old stuff let me know.
Having trouble with the vpc 5.0.4 installation on my ibook (10.3.1, 640mg).
I have gotten past the permissions issue, and the program (XP) works its way
all the way to the "windows is starting up" page - the next page would be
the xp desktop! But it hangs on the starting up page - it does not freeze -
just hangs, and we're talking many hours. I've allocated 340 meg of ram to
it; I've quit the finder to free up more of the system.
Has this come up and was there a solution? Or must I shell out the heavy
bucks for 6.0?

Many Thanks
Dave

My problem exactly (on a 800MHz eMac with Panther). There are other
threads about this kind of incompatibility on this board. Check them
out...it's not clear that there's a solution except to go to
VPC6.1...but if you only use VPC for Solitaire and a couple of seldom
used applications, it may be better to get a used low-end PC for those
rare moments. JF<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

VPC 5.0.x simply doesn't run on Panther. For many people the entire OS
freezes causing your to hard-reboot on the powerswitch :-(

There is still no know solution! upgrade to 6.x if you wanna run VPC

There is one very unsatisfactory work-around. Install VPC 5, and then
follow the instructions in the VPC manual to make it run in OS9. You
will have to reboot in OS9 to make it work, but if you're just using
VPC to handle a few programs, it's better than shelling out big bucks
(at least for a while).

Question: There is a relatively low cost upgrade disk out there--it's
not clear if it's an upgrade to VPC6.1 from VPC6.0 or if you can use
it to upgrade from VPC5. Somewhere, though, either Apple or MS should
provide a FREE upgrade for those of us who paid for Panther.

Warning: Ever since signing on to this board a couple of days ago my
email has been bombarded with fake virus-laden messages allegedly
coming from MS. Has this happened to anybody else?

Re: The bogus emails from MSFT..

In your last post you used your *REAL* email address. Netnews is being
scanned constantly by hackers looking for new emailaddresses with which
to launch attempts to get you to open the SWEN virus attachment (in PC
and attacks IE).

DONT open the file!!!!

I was getting 150 + emails a day til my ISP 'spammed' the emails for me

And to use Netnews, set up a PHONY email address (I got one from
HOTMAIL and never look at it). When posting I use the HOTMAIL addr...

In THOTH Preferences, go to Topic 'Messages' and set the Anti-UCE
address to the phony or not used address... THOTH will print that one
instead of your Real one.

Cheers, Jim B
