But perhaps they'll have to stop naming them after cats altogether,
the latest leopard doesn't have the default desktop picture as the animals
fur either.
Perhaps they'll use star constilations in the future versions of OS X

Humans and apes already share something over 95% of their genes anyway.

By "Mac OS X to be announced at WWDC" does the OP just mean 'named'
at WWDC, not to be made available?

Humans and mice share over 95% of their genes, or so I heard.

We share a lot of genes with quite a lot of life on Earth, you know.
Anything with `our type of cell with the nucleus and DNA and all that'
shares plenty of genes with us. That means trees too.

Jeeze, what a moron you are[1].

I'd imagine that the cats involved wanted to do it.

Hard to force a tiger or a lion to do that sort of thing if it doesn't
want to, I'd guess.

Just As Childish

[1] Consider: some dogs will attempt to mate with almost anything, up
to and including the postman's leg. That's not a good a particularly
good idea from the point of view of getting any breeding done, but the
drive to shag as generally seen in mammals rarely involves any sensible
thinking, does it?

Not sure about that, but I had heard of a scientist who bred a bulldog
with a shitsu, and ended up with a bullshit.

Sorry, couldn't resist.

These are popular statements - but it is not obvious what meaning they
have. We share molecules as well. There are parts of our
chromosomes which we do not yet understand which we are discovering
are used.

We have nerves, bones, digestive systems, skin, etc. Those parts are
similar enough to have large parts of their genes similar as well. So
let's measure them in a way that makes our point.

Oil paintings of the masters and of the jokers share the same make
ups.

A human being (or other animal) basically is a community anyway. We
have more alien cells in us than human cells. Our brains take votes
with some parts having bigger votes than other parts.

Chickens are worse - but no other species has the diversity of dogs.

Which is all why this fuss about human-animal "hybrid" is so much
cobblers.

Not *all* the fuss is cobblers.

I'm worried about the risks to the ecological balance - the risk of
doing huge damage to `the big machine' by letting too many very big
changes out into the world too quickly,.

I gather than GM crops in some parts of the world are already causing
problems on a local level - soya in the Americas, and ISTR that a pest
resistant form of cotton grown in India has dealt with the pest it was
designed to deal with, but started to suffer from a worse one that
wasn't a problem when the lesser pest was around.

Funny? In a macabre way, yes; at least it's not a catastrophe.

As far as I'm concerned, it's not the source of the genes used in the
genetic engineering that's the issue: it's how the resulting organism
works in the environment.

Rowland.

But your concerns are measured and intelligent rather than of the
knee-jerk variety that we saw from some churchmen earlier in the year.

We saw them, did we? Interesting.

I think all the churchmen I've heard on the subject have been more
measured than me - if not quite as intelligent, unless I happen to have
heard Rowan Williams on the subject. Then again, I listen to Radio 4, I
have no telly, and do nothing but sneer at newspapers these days.

So who was raving on, and how were they raving?

Rowland.

Such an intellectual! Rowan Williams, he's that C of E chap, talks like
Tom Jones, came to my house and stole a side of beef, right?

As I recall, it was some (one? two? can't remember) Catholic bishops.
The word "Frankenstein" was definitely used. It caused something of a
stir.

There's an article in the June 2008 Scientific American entitled "What
is a Species", which discusses the problem of trying to define species
to satisfy everybody.
