Depends on what you want to do.
If you're talking about basic tasks like web surfing, e-mail, word
processing, spreadsheet, etc., anything can get the job done. Use
what you think is easier. I personally think the Mac is easier,
followed by Windows, followed by Linux.
If you need to do more heavy-hitting stuff, then you should first
look at the kinds of applications you will be running and then pick
your OS (and hardware) to suit its requirements.
For gaming, Windows is still the platform of choice, although a lot
more games have been released for the Mac in recent years than before.
If you're going to do audio/video editing (e.g. loading home movies
from a digital video camera into the computer for editing and burning
to DVD), I think the Mac is the best choice. MacOS comes with some
pretty good software for this, with more powerful packages available
if you want to pay for it.
If you're looking at running a server of some kind (web server, mail
server, database server, etc.) I would recommend any kind of UNIX.
MacOS is UNIX-based and can work in this capacity. Linux is also
very good for this.
WRT what I actually prefer to use at home, that would be MacOS,
followed by Linux, followed by Windows. I do maintain a Windows box,
but primarily just for gaming. Although administration of Linux is
not easy for a novice to pick up, I'm no novice and like the fact that
I can do some things that I can't with other systems (like upgrade key
system components without a reboot.)
