Well...it depends on what you mean by "2008 standards." If you mean a
newer version of Mac OS X, then it's simple enough: buy the newest
release, assuming your system supports it.

Expanding on Steve's answer: The current version of Mac OS X is 10.5, so
you're two major releases behind. But the first thing to look at is what
kind of machine you have so some determination can be made as to what OS
version it can run (or be made to run) reasonably. Then you have to look
at whether you even really *care* about the newer features enough to
both with any upgrading you'll have to do.

So let's start at step 1:

What model machine do you have and how much memory is in it? Both of
those questions should be answered in the "About This Mac" window
available through the Apple menu.

Are you already aware of any specific features on 10.4 or 10.5 that are
interesting to you, or are you at this point really only looking to
upgrade for the principle of the thing?

My computer is running 10.3.9 and it does just fine in 2008.
What is your computer not doing that you wish it to do?

You should at least follow the free upgrade path to 10.3.9.

If at some point you want to use software that requires a
newer release, then it's time to consider either a new copy
of 10.5 or perhaps a used copy of 10.4.
