(Really) old mac upgrade

What is the earliest Mac I can upgrade to a G4 with a ton of RAM, add
usb ports, etc.? I'd love to start a project like that with my Mac
Plus, but I don't know if it's possible or not. :)

Realistically, you'd be looking at a B&W G3.
