macintosh works 3.0 spreadsheet filet export to excel w/ n..

how do i transfer a macintosh works 3.0 spreadsheet file to any version of
excel that operates in any version of mac operating systems(preferably an
excel in mac os 9.2 classic or mac os 10.4 tiger)......in this works file,
several cells have detailed notes associated with the cells, and i need to
transfer those in tact......i tried saving the file from works 3.0 directly
to ms excel 3.0 option(the newest version at that time), but the notes are
lost, as that version of excel did not have a 'notes' equivalent, which i
believe is called 'cell comments' in new excel versions, such as excel within
ms office '98 for mac etc.......any help would be greatly appreciatied.
