I know Office has an option to send the current document via e-mail,
but is there some way to set this up in OS X (e.g., via Automator or
scripting)? When I locate a file (in the Finder) it would be so nice
to right/ctrl-click on it and have Mail open a new document with the
file attached.
It's frustrating that Windows users have this option, but it's
available on the Mac!
Thnx! -c >> Stay informed about: "Send to E-mail Recipient" option in OS X? |

That was a typo... should have read, "but it's NOT available on the

I've often wondered why you can only do this in Finder, and not from
within the (open) file's application (I always see it greyed out). Is it
because the file is in use?

I think it's because it's up to the developer if they want to avail of
the service. It isn't much work to implement, so a request to the
developer might work.

I'd buy that, except that I've yet to see a single application support it.
That causes me to think it's beyond the developer's control.

I suppose there is info available in the developer section of apple's
website, but have a look at this screen capture from my bbedit:
http://img240.imagevenue.com/img.php?image=34998_bbedit_122_176lo.jpg
It looks like services you implement aren't just available as an
addition to your appps features, but are available when appropriate to
any other app. So I have direct access to script editor, mail etc, but
also to other installed apps that have implemeted services in that menu,
e.g. Skype, iCab etc.
It all looks very useful and polished. And because it's a menu item, I
can assign a keyboard shortcut to any of them, e.g. to send selection or
whole file to someone via Mail.app (the OP's question).

I believe this functionality is available within Word (and maybe
Excel).

MacGourmet, a recipe data base, can send e-mail of its files. When you
click the magic icon in MacGourmet, Mail opens a new message form, with
the recipe in the body, ready for you to add the recipient.
