....an Airfix scale model of the Saunders Roe SR.53!
I met a chap (Dave Montgomery) at the Scale Modelworld, who had one on
display. When I mentioned I hadn't been able to find a kit of this
aircraft, he offered to send me one. It turns out he collects old Airfix
kits, and he had a few SR. 53's (finished kits) lying around.
One of those arrived here today, built but unpainted, so it'll be a nice
project. When finished, it'll go in the 'weird stuff' section of my
collection, along with e.g. the SR. 177. Woo hoo!
(I later found out that the LH-shop does have an SR. 53 kit in stock (a
copy of the old airfix kit, apparently).

I built one of those models back in the early 70's. I'm ashamed to say that I
binned it when I got married in 83 :-(

You wouldn't just happen to have any pics (of the real thing) lying around
would you?

Yep:
<http://www.gsansom.demon.co.uk/vfaero/oneoff/sr53b.jpg>
?aircraft_id=64>
The RAF museum at Cosford has the single surviving example.

Oooooo, what a pretty plane. That almost looks too good to be British. I
don't believe I ever came across that before.

We discussed it here a while ago. There's a series on the Discovery
Channel, "Planes that never flew"; the SR. 53 and 177 are the subject of
one of the programmes. Other programs in the series talk about the U.S.
nuclear-powered bomber program, and the Lockheed L-133 (the first U.S.
jet fighter design, from 1939).

I know, I should have kept my 1/24th scale Mirage III though, what a beauty
that was :-(

How come you chucked everything? Not enough room in your flat for two
people? Could you have put them in storage temporarily someplace, like with
your parents? I know, I know, this is trying to mop up the milk after it has
dried, turned to dust and blown away, but I can't help drawing lessons for
future reference.

I thought they were just a load of dust collectors. TBH I always enjoyed
building them and painting them mostly, I wasn't that interested in them when
they were finished.
I had a nice deal with my local toy shop, they gave me models for free and
paint & glue, I built them and they displayed them in the shop. Every now and
then they would sell a bunch off for a nice profit as well, so everybody won.
I did keep a bunch of my favourites in a lockup in my parents place, but it
got broken into and they were stolen.
