Hi there,

Every time I create a new document the "Normal" style always has the paragraph setting of "after spacing" set to 10pt. I want to change this "default" number to 0 so every time I create a new document the "after spacing" is set to 0pt.

How do I make that change?

The trick is that you need to modify the "Normal" style that's defined in the Normal TEMPLATE.

What many people don't realize is that when you create a new document, Word pulls the settings for that document (including style definitions) from the Normal template. So if you re-define the styles there (in the template), then your new documents will inherit those styles. The template you want - Normal.dotm - is buried fairly deep, so it can be a challenge to locate. Here's how...

Using Word's menus, open the template: File menu > Open...
Navigate to [user name]/Library/Application Support/Microsoft/Office/User Templates/Normal.dotm and open that template.
(Note: Don't drill down in the Finder to locate that template in it's folder and then double-click it....that won't open the template itself, it will just open a new blank document and you won't be redefining the style in the template).
Note that the document title (at the top of the document window) should say "Normal.dotm", not "Document1".
With the Normal.dotm template open (it just looks like a blank document), click Format > Style...
In the Styles box, click "Normal" (it should already be selected by default, but make sure that's the style you've got selected), then click Modify...
In the Modify Style dialog, click the Format pop-up menu in the lower left corner and click Paragraph...
In the Paragraph dialog, click the Indents and Spacing tab at the top (again, it should already be selected by default, but make sure that's the tab you've got selected), and then under Spacing, change the "After" setting from 10 pts (the default) to 0 pts. This will redefine the Normal style so there is no extra space between the paragraphs.
Click OK a couple times to close the two dialogs; when you get back to the Style dialog, click Apply.
Back in your Normal.dotm template document (which should still appear blank), click the Save button or File > Save.
Quit out of Word (Word > Quit Word).
Relaunch Word, create a new document, type some stuff, hit Enter/Return, and enjoy your nice, tight paragraph spacing.

Hope that helps.

Simpler way:

To change this in all documents created from now on, change the Normal
style.

First, select Format | Style. Normal should be selected.

Click on Modify--make sure "add to template" is CHECKED (that will send
the change to the Normal template, as the other poster mentioned. No
need to actually make the change in the Normal template).

You'll see a Format menu in the bottom of the dialog--select Paragraph
from it, and change the Spacing: After setting from 10 to 0.

I know that when someone has been used to using Word as a typewriter for a
long time, Word 2008's imposition of 10 points of leading after a paragraph
must be annoying and all they want is an immediate solution-- especially if
all they type is short letters and memos.

However, for longer documents there are huge advantages to having leading
above or below paragraphs. For example, if you want to squeeze some
paragraphs up to fit some text on a page rather than have it spill overleaf,
it's *very* easy to do it by modifying the leading. Also, headings
automatically "glue" themselves to following text, so you don't have to
manually adjust formatting when the document is completed.

If you're interested in any of this, take a look at the article "The
advantages of including leading (blank space above or below) in styles" on
page 176 of the following reference; "Leading above, or below, paragraphs?"
on page 177; and an article on "minimum maintenance formatting" in Appendix
A starting on page 164.

The reference is some notes on the way I use Word for the Mac, titled "Bend
Word to Your Will", which are available as a free download from the Word
MVPs' website (http://word.mvps.org/Mac/Bend/BendWordToYourWill.html).

[Note: "Bend Word to your will" is designed to be used electronically and
most subjects are self-contained dictionary-style entries. If you decide to
read more widely than the item I've referred to, it's important to read the
front end of the document -- especially pages 3 and 5 -- so you can select
some Word settings that will allow you to use the document effectively.]
