Post subject: How to map to a share from W2K server from G5 Mac
Archived from groups: microsoft>public>win2000>macintosh (more info?)

Hi,

I am pretty much new to the Mac world when it comes to networking it with
Windows servers. I am a network admin for a small firm and have no problem
mapping betw PCs and Windows server. I thought I have done the right thing
by installing the Apple protocol on the Windows 2000 and Windows 2003 (SBS)
servers and then enable sharing on the folder I am trying to share. I have
added the appropriate right for the Mac user to gain access to the share as
well from the Permission tab of the folder.

When I try to map from the Mac G5 to the Windows 2000 server for example:
smb://192.168.200.101/creatives

If would prompt me to enter in the username and password and so I supply it
and then I only get next the box that comes up which allows me to connect to
MS UAM volume only. How do I get the Creatives share to show up so that I
can not to that instead?

Would you be able to give me directions and step to help me out?

Thank you,

Helen

Hi Helen!

You're mixing two different things.

First, the AppleTalk protocol is not necessary if you're planning to
connect to your server via SMB (Windows style file sharing). If you plan
to use AFP (Macintosh style file sharing) then you need to install File
Services for Macintosh and not just the AppleTalk protocol.

Your syntax above for connecting via SMB looks correct. I suspect you're
running into a classic problem on the Windows Server 2003 system where a
policy setting is preventing your connection. Have a look at this page
on Microsoft's website
<http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;887429>. While
it doesn't specifically address Macs it does explain about SMB
connections and which policy you should disable.

Hope this helps! bill
