It's not quite what you're asking, but you can access all French
characters on a regular US keyboard. Various option combinations get you
accets (for example, option-e followed by a vowel gets you a grave
accent over that vowel), and option-c gets you the c cedilla. I'm sure
somebody has a list somewhere, or you can just open Key Caps and hold
down option and have a look. It's not quite as convenient as having them
directly accessable, but I type French from time to time that way and it
