hi all,

I have a powerbook G4 running OS 10.3.6. I am the administrator of the
powerbook but am new to using Unix commands.

The problem is when i start up excel, it gives the error message as
below:

'<FileName> cannot be accessed.

the file may be read-only, or you may be trying to access a read-only
location. or, the server the document is stored on may not be
responding'.

I tried to look up permissions stuff on the net and saw the permissions
on my home folder. i even gave complete permissions (drwxrwxrwx) but
still no results.

I am running the student version of MS Office.

Please advise what i could do. I have another problem with word and i
have posted it in the word forum.

Thanks,
Pawan

Hi Mr. Gordon,

I run Excel Version 2004

I tried using disk utility. it helped fix some errors. i then restarted
Mac and tried accessing an excel file and came up with the same error.
on some hunch, i just turned off the file vault. now the program runs
neat. although this is not what i want ( i want the file vault to run
), for now, it seems to solve my problem of excel. with the file vault
turned off, excel dosent seem to have a problem.

Is there any way i could have the file vault running as well as use
excel without getting any errors?

Thanks,
Pawan

Hi,

I don't know what version of Excel you are using, but it sounds like
either Version X or Version 2004.

You'll get that message whenever Excel tries to open a file, but MacOS
won't let it for some reason.

Going with your hunch that there's a problem with permissions, please
don't try to fix them yourself. Apple provides a utility called Disk
First Aid that will repair permssions for you. Look in your Utilities
folder. Use Disk First Aid to repair permissions on your drive and then
post back to let us know whether or not that fixed the problem.

Thanks.
