Three tries and the Leopard installer fails at the same place each time:

At first I thought I must have a bad DVD, but I've read a couple posts
on the net from folks saying pulling out some of their RAM allowed the
install to complete. If that's the case, this must be some sort of bug
in the installer.

I guess I'm shutting down to remove some of my 4.5 GB of RAM now...
pffft... ; )

Well after removing all but two RAM chips, the install went without a
hitch. After I put the RAM back in and restarted everything is fine.

I'll run memtest to see if it finds anything wrong with my RAM, but I'm
leaning more towards a buggy installer...

I can send you my home address in case you want to be sure you won't get
into this kind of problem anymore at all by getting rid of the RAM. ;)

Surely that would depend on the nature of the rocket fuel and engines and
not the OS.

Thanks.

I'm running Rember (memtest) on my RAM right now. It's at the Bit Flip
test near the end and it hasn't found anything wrong yet.

I'm suspecting the 10.5 installer is just buggy at this point, which
isn't surprising to me (yet is a little irritating ;).

Well, the DVD check at the beginning passed with flying colors. I'm
thinking a bug in the installer.

Are you aware your -- sig line is missing the trailing space?

Test Results

All tests passed!

Total built-in memory: 4.5 GB

This is the total amount of physical memory that the computer has
installed. If this figure is not showing the correct amount of memory
there may be a problem with one or more installed DIMMS.

Available memory: 3130 MB

Available memory is the amount of physical memory that is currently
not in use by any other processes. All available memory will be used
for testing when the "All" option is selected. To increase the amount of
available memory, you can restart your computer before testing. If you
are familiar with the command line (CLI), you can run memtest (the core
of Rember) in single-user mode. See Rember help, or
http://www.memtestosx.org for more information.

Requested amount: All MB

The total amount of memory requested for testing by the Rember
application. Not all requested memory can be allocated for testing. See
information on "Available memory" for more information.

Memory allocated for testing: 3042 MB

This is the total amount of memory that memtest was able to
allocate for testing. See "Available memory" section for more
information.

-------

Loops selected: 1

Total loops selected by user for testing. All loops should complete
when testing is successful. Test failure when the "Continue on Error"
preference is selected will cancel tests before this number of loops has
been completed. Users can also cancel testing before this number is
reached.

Loops completed: 1

Total loops completed by memtest. Note that the Rember is not
always able to identify how many loops ran. If there are discrepancies
between this and the loops selected, the log should be examined to
determine exactly how many loops were performed.
-------

Total execution time: 5400 seconds

This is the total amount of time that it took to execute the
selected tests. Execution time may vary from system to system, and is
provided as a guide for determining how long users can expect tests to
run based on the amount of memory installed on the system.

Testing start time: 2007-11-04 08:52:02 -0600

Testing end time: 2007-11-04 10:22:07 -0600

Conclusion: The Leopard installer has quite the nasty little bug!

One of my clients bought their graphic designers four of the last of the
dual bootable MDD G4s early in 2003 before they were out of inventory at
MacMall, with the stock single 512MB DIMMs and maxed them out with three
more 512MB DIMMs each from a third party. These replaced various older
G4s and, while they came with both Mac OS 9.2.2 and Jaguar installed,
they were booted exclusively in OS 9 for the first year plus and used
with whatever versions of QuarkXpress and Adobe apps they already had
installed on the older Macs. All four machines ran smoothly.

When we finally upgraded to OS X versions of the design apps we also
upgraded to Panther, which by then had been out for over 6 months.
Panther installation failed on three of the four, all at the same point,
and removing all but the original Apple-supplied RAM remedied that. We
then tried installing the third party DIMMs one at a time and found that
fully half of them, all of each had been non-problematic with OS 9,
caused the Macs to either fail to boot at all or to crash frequently in
use. We had already run the Apple Hardware Test and all of the DIMMs
had actually _passed_. The vendor then replaced the RAM and life was
good.

If it truly is a RAM fault, I'd sure like to know a way to test it and
actually see the problem.

That's just it. There are situations in which the RAM is faulty in some
way and the _only_ test that turns up the defect is actual use. I've
seen the scenario a number of times: A computer crashes frequently,
usually hard freezes that force you to reboot. Various RAM tests fail
to reveal a problem, yet testing the DIMMs one at a time shows that one
is the culprit. Or in some cases it's been more complex, including a G4
I once owned. It had three DIMMs and was having more than daily hard
freezes. The Apple Hardware Test and memtest didn't detect problems,
even running memtest in repeated loops overnight. I tried using the G4
with each of the DIMMs individually, and none of them caused problems
that way. I even tried them pairwise, again without problems. I test
all of my DIMM slots, too, and all checked out. As soon as I returned
to using all three DIMMs together, though, the freezes returned.
