Hi,

I've read that some of the scanner software that come with scanners can
remove dust specks from the scanned images. Does anyone know of
shareware or freeware that can do that? I've looked at a bunch of s/w
on versiontracker.com but haven't found any. I'm running OS X Leopard.

TIA,

The Guy

Photoshop has a noise filter that claims to do that, but I have found it to
be ineffective and besides that it unsharpens the image.

What I have done is first, to use canned air to remove dust from the target
before scanning it, and then if there are still dust specks (there always
are) remove them one at a time with Photoshop. Tedious, but if you're trying
to save an irreplaceable old photo, it's worth the trouble.

Dust and scratches aren't noise, so you should try the 'Dust &
Scratches' filter rather than the 'Noise' filter. No software solution
is perfect, though, because software can't distinguish between small
details and dust.

Errr... In PSE the menu item is Filter > Noise > Dust & Scratches

It was the Polaroid Dust and Scratch Removal application and plug-in,
located here:

http://www.versiontracker.com/php/dlpage.php?id=17686&db=mac&pid=34007...nd=&lnk

or

here:

http://tinyurl.com/2cvb4k

It is also located here:

http://www.polaroid.com/service/software/poladsr/poladsr.html

I have not used this software under Leopard or Photoshop CS3 so I don't
know if either one is compatible. I would guess that the plug-in does
not work with CS3; almost none of the old plug-ins do. And installation
is a bit clunky.

However, the standalone application appears to run under Leopard. It
has not been updated since 2002, but if you want to see how well it
works there is an example here:

I assume you are looking for the ICE software. It is not free.

Polaroid had a free "dust and scratches" filter some years ago that may
still be available. IIRC it was available both as a PS plugin and
stand-alone. And, had adjustments that allowed quantitation of effect.
Worked better than the filter available in PSE.

OTOH, if you have bought a scanner you might already have the ICE filter
in the provided software. Did you look? It came "free" with my Nikon
film scanner.

Digital ICE is a combination of hardware and software, not just
software. If your scanners has the necessary hardware built in (like
Nikon filmscanners do), the scanner software will include a setting to
turn it on or off. If your scanner does not have that hardware, the
software option would be useless.

Weird. I use canned air and one of those anti-static brushes with the
radioactive Polonium in it and still the slides have dust, most of it issuing
from the cardboard frames as fast as I can remove it.

As for scratches, those are on old prints (by old I mean 50 to 125 years) and
the scratch filter doesn't begin to do the job.

Have you seen the demo in C J Campbell's post?
