With EverQuest for the Mac being released tomorrow, June 23, I'm
curious if any of the folks here are planning on giving it a try? I've
been playing in the beta for a couple of months and really enjoying it.

I might try it sometime, but after very limited beta testing I won't be
signing up just yet.

I was in the beta from the beginning and for me it was a very stable
beta. I only had two real things that were 'bugs' One was disconnects
(which most everyone was having, but should be fixed for about
everyone) The other was kernel panics because I was using a rage 128
card (unsuported in X, much less EQ)

That being said I think it was (will be, in 3.5 hours I guess)
released a bit too early. Some things that could have been done before
it was released, if it woulda been bumped a bit, but weren't. However
I think Brad (Westlake coder in charge of EQ) will have these bugs
killed soon after release, and some of them you will likely never know
exsisted. Some other things about Sony that I heard make me worry a
bit (about them not EQ) Overall I think it will be a much better
release than alot of recent MMOs that have come out.

Few things that I know.. There will be currently 1 server, Once the
population there has built up they will add a new one or split it.
(Standard practice on the PC side) When you buy EQ you will get access
to all the expansions up to an encluding Plains of Knowledge. (Version
that will be released is actually a few patched past the PoK release)
If things go well (I'd guess good sales) then the newer expansions
will be brought over and the Mac version will be brought up to sync
with the PC version..

One thing to note is that the server will me _mac only_ meaning no PC
EQ players can log in. Also Mac users _cannot_ log into the PC
servers. Far as I know Mac users will never be able to play on the
same servers as PC users.

My limited testing wasn't due to technical difficulties, though, after
playing EQ for the PS2, I was really disappointed with the frame rate on my
brand new Dual 1.25Ghz machine. It was due to the reason that I keep playing
Clan Lord after all these years. I don't want a game where almost every
button on the keyboard does something (slight exaggeration) and I don't like
to have to perfectly formulate a simple sentence just to get a newbie quest
running. Maybe I'm just not smart enough, but I like simplicity and ease of
use. EQ for PS2 has that and so does Clan Lord.

I wasn't even able to get a successful download of the beta, but
probably won't buy it. CL burned me out on online games for awhile.

I bought the PC version last year, and played it for two or three weeks.
It's very pretty, and there's some nice things about the system, but
there was no role-playing to speak of. I think the bad communication
system was a factor (instead of speech bubbles, all you have is the
equivalent of the CL text window), but mostly the game seemed to be
populated entirely by Michael types. However, most of them didn't share
his maturity and classy vocabulary.

I'm hoping that Star Wars Galaxies (due out in two days!) will be
better. From what I've read about the game design, it seems like it will
be more appealing to people interested in role-playing. Or so I hope.

Frin what I've heard from beta testers, it's not that it's appealing to
roleplayers. It's that it's absolutely unappealing to powergamers,
because the combat system and economy designed so poorly. Roleplayers
may just be slightly harder to discourage.

I've been playing the beta for a couple of months and have been having
a blast. My copy is ordered and on the way, so yes.. I will be playing.
Azure will be as well, when he gets his G5 :)

Having only played CL for a very short time, I don't really know what
you mean by "Michael types". I'm assuming this refers to obnoxious
players. Everyone is hoping the the Mac version is a bit different as
it will be populated by Mac users, not PC users. :-)

Whether or not a text window is better or worse than speech bubbles is
a matter of opinion. If I miss a speech bubble, how do I go back and
see what was said without having to ask? Personally, it is just
different and doesn't necessarily help or hinder roleplaying IMHO.

I think the roleplaying aspect is actually effected more by other
issues. Primarily the fact that EverQuest is a much more complex game
than CL, from what I can tell. CL has just 3 classes. Your only options
for changing how they level is to visit different trainers. There is a
limited amount of equipment and the world is smaller (not small, just
smaller). All of this leads to many more options of what fits together
how and is a game in itself for many people. Some folks mostly try to
gain the best of everything they can, to make themselves the "most
powerful". In doing this, they don't necessarily have to roleplay.
Also, the world itself was created by many more people than Clan Lord's
was. It is harder to keep consistency in order to have a good
background in that situation.

Clan Lord, on the other hand, with it's dearth of information built
into the game - many fewer cities, for example, is more dependent on
the players for its sense of being. Players who are attracted to Clan
Lord can't be quite as focussed on levels, items, etc., since there
simply isn't as much information about them available from within the
game. (Of course I have seen players who count their levels carefully
and are focussed on these items). Instead, it has evolved over time for
people to focus more on the roleplaying aspects of the game.

I don't think that either one is inherently better or worse. Just
different.

I doubt that Galaxies will have a different feel. It will be populated
by the same people as EverQuest. Instead of everyone trying to reach
level 65, most people will be trying to become Grand Jedi, or whatever
the equivalent is. I will be very surprised if there is much more
roleplaying there than in EQ.

My copy arrived last night and I spent a few hours wandering around. I
encountered a true newbie and spent some time helping him learn how
things work in the game. We then found a couple of other people to
group with and proceeded to explore a bit and get killed several times
in the process. It was a lot of fun.

It is kind of strange to start EverQuest and see that there are only 18
players in the world. That won't last more than another day or two as
the game starts arriving in stores.

Command F to see the text window, and scroll back. You can also open the
textlog (if you are running one) in a different app and see what has happened
up to the time you opened it.

OK, so given this, why is opening a text window to see what is there
better than simply having messages in a text window to begin with? I
suppose maybe that the fact you can get messages from guildmembers no
matter where they are, or tells from people is not so realistic. Maybe
they are magic speech?

Is this that different from what sunstones or other items can do? Can
you actually talk through sunstones, or just click?

You asked what to do if you missed a speech bubble, so I explained. I never use
the text window unless I miss something or I want to go back and find something
that happened earlier. The speech bubbles work fine for me 95% of the time and I
like them better, probably because I'm used to them.

I guess you are talking about a different game with messages from guildmembers,
cause I don't know what you are talking about ;) So I couldn't answer your
question, since I don't understand it.
