As my 20G iBook is maxed out, I need some external storage. I hadn't given it
much thought and was leaning toward one of the Maxtors. Reading the specs
closely, it mentioned 120V AC output. That's when it struck me that not all
external firewire drives work like my iPod.

Does anyone have recommendations for brands, models or web sites that will guide
me to external drives that do not require an AC adaptor?

One more note on this. I'm looking for a self powered drive which provides an
additional firewire port so I can daisychain the iPod since this drive would be
holding the music which clogs my main drive.

BTW, is that a concept of firewire or is my brain stuck in SCSI mode?

Google for the Firefly and Firelite from SmartDisk.

Or hit Pricewatch and get the drive and then Google for "firewire
enclosure 2.5" and roll your own like I did. :) About $300 all said and
done for 40GB.

LaCie's PocketDrive runs off power from the FireWire bus. It also has
USB 2.0 ports and an optional AC adapter for the times when it's
necessary to connect via USB or to a laptop with a FireWire Cardbus
card.

I have a 20 GB model and it's very handy -- was very good for keeping
personal stuff and alternating between my home Mac and my work Mac,
taking work home, keeping my e-mail client and files stored, and so
on.

Go Big Blue (Kentucky Wildcats)! Go #15 (Michael Waltrip, NAPA Chevy)!

To reply, just remove the restrictorplates...

I also have a LaCie Pocketdrive. Another external firewire drive that
will not require an external adaptor is Smartdisk's "Firelight" external
drives - I've used one of them before as well, and while they appear to
be not quite as rugged as the LaCie drive, they are a bit smaller (and
cooler looking).

Greetings
I've dealt with Firewiredirect for a number of years and like their
prices.

Always the newest firewire enclosures and chipsets, prompt service and
no bs.
