Post subject: problems booting from a partitioned external firewire drive
Archived from groups: comp>sys>mac>misc (more info?)

I recently bought an external firewire 500GB hard drive (Iomega
MiniMax). I partitioned the drive into two parts then cloned the
computer's hard drive on to the smallest partition using SilverKeeper.
The drive format is Mac OS Extended (Journaled)

When I try to boot from the external cloned system (using Startup Disk
in System Preferences) I am presented with the registration and set-up
proceedure that you get when booting a new computer for the first time.

I have tried cloning the DVD install disk to the other partition and
booting from that but I get the same thing.

I'm not sure if the problem is with the partitions or the drive or
something else.

I can succesfully boot from a cloned system on an unpartitioned external
firewire Lacie drive which I have been using up till now for backups.

Any suggestions?

(eMac, OS X 10.4.2)

Okay, so you're saying that you _do_ have a bootable OS X on that
partition. Keep going through the setup and you should be fine.

Yes, it's bootable. But why is it asking to be set-up and registered if
it's a clone of the main drive? When booting from the Lacie external
drive everything appears and behaves exactly like the main drive (though
slightly slower).

I didn't complete the registration process so I don't know how
everything would run. Even if I had, I would probably have to go through
the process again the next time I backed up with SilverKeeper (I'm
guessing).

At the moment I have just cloned the Users folder as a backup on the
Iomega drive and will continue to use the Lacie as a bootable clone.

Any other suggestions as to what's going on?

I've seen this before on occasion, and I don't know why it happens, but
once you've gone through the setup again (and you can quit out of the
registration part to save time) all the user accounts and data are right
where they should be. Sometimes you even have to create a new account
at this point, but from there you can log out and then log into your
usual account.

I'll try that. Thanks for your help Mike.

My guess is that your backup utility did not include the magic
file (/private/var/db/.AppleSetupDone) to tell it that the setup
assistant has already been run.

You might try SuperDuper (free for a full clone) or Carbon Copy
Cloner utilities for creating your clone.
