Post subject: quick question - but its driving me crazy!
Archived from groups: comp>sys>mac>system (more info?)

Hello,

ok, question(s)

I just bought a little canon that uses sdhc cards. I have these
questions that I can't seem to answer by reading anywhere....

1) Are sdhc cards supposed to mount in the finder like my compact
flash cards do? (I can only access card via software like iphoto or
iview)

2) Is it possible that I could be having trouble with the camera usb
cable (the only method I have used) and should look into buying a sdhc
reader?

I am sending back my 8gig as it has been periodically made some files
unavailable for upload, but I honestly feel odd that both the 8gig and
the little sd card that came with the camera fail to mount. I have a
little application called "photorescue wizard" and it cannot see
either of these cards. Strange.

Help!

SDHC appears to be a high capacity version of SD, for cards larger than
4 GB. I hadn't heard that name before.

See <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Secure_Digital_card> for background.

The ability to have a card appear in Finder as a mounted volume depends
on the device in which the card is inserted.

Most Canon cameras act as image capture devices and use a special data
transfer protocol which Finder doesn't know about (but is supported by
iPhoto or Image Capture). This has one advantage: software on the
computer can control the camera and make it take pictures. It also means
you don't need to "eject" the memory card (but should still be careful
not to unplug the camera while in the middle of transferring data).

Most other camera brands make the card appear as a storage device, so it
appears as a mounted volume in Finder and has to be ejected before
unplugging the camera.

If you want the same behaviour with the card from your Canon camera,
then you use the memory card in a card reader, rather than plugging the
camera directly into the computer.

That is a good idea anyway. Using the camera to read the card wastes
battery power on the camera and is often slower than a card reader. It
also means you can swap memory cards in the camera and keep taking
photos while your computer does the relatively slow task of transferring
photos out of the other card.

You will need a card reader which specifically supports SDHC cards. A
general SD reader will not work.

Same problem for both cards - the Canon camera doesn't act as a mass
storage device, so Finder can't see the cards. You need a card reader to
see the cards in Finder.

Is that possible with Canon camcorders also, or does special
remote-control software have to be used?

Thank you one and all. I'll go and get a reader and see how that
works. Such excellent answers! Its a delight to hear clarity!

I believe the image capture protocol is a USB mechanism for taking still
images. I'm not sure whether Canon cameras can be told to take photos
using generic software - I've only seen it being done with their special
software, so it might be a proprietary mechanism.

A Canon camcorder with Firewire should be able to be controlled from
iMovie or anything else which supports Firewire device control. No idea
if the camcorder in question is USB.
