SDHC appears to be a high capacity version of SD, for cards larger than
4 GB. I hadn't heard that name before.
See <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Secure_Digital_card> for background.

The ability to have a card appear in Finder as a mounted volume depends
on the device in which the card is inserted.
Most Canon cameras act as image capture devices and use a special data
transfer protocol which Finder doesn't know about (but is supported by
iPhoto or Image Capture). This has one advantage: software on the
computer can control the camera and make it take pictures. It also means
you don't need to "eject" the memory card (but should still be careful
not to unplug the camera while in the middle of transferring data).
Most other camera brands make the card appear as a storage device, so it
appears as a mounted volume in Finder and has to be ejected before
unplugging the camera.
If you want the same behaviour with the card from your Canon camera,
then you use the memory card in a card reader, rather than plugging the
camera directly into the computer.

That is a good idea anyway. Using the camera to read the card wastes
battery power on the camera and is often slower than a card reader. It
also means you can swap memory cards in the camera and keep taking
photos while your computer does the relatively slow task of transferring
photos out of the other card.
You will need a card reader which specifically supports SDHC cards. A
general SD reader will not work.

Same problem for both cards - the Canon camera doesn't act as a mass
storage device, so Finder can't see the cards. You need a card reader to
see the cards in Finder.
