I have a .pst file exported from Outlook that I want to read on my
Mac. I downloaded Outlook 2001 for Mac, but can't get it to run
without identifying an Exchange Server and mailbox in the
configuration. In other words, I'd like to be able to just use Outlook
for Mac as a way to read this file, not send or receive email. Can it
be done?

No. Your only other option is to read the file in Windows Outlook
(perhaps through VirtualPC, or a friend's Windows machine), which does
not require an active Exchange connection. From there you can convert
the messages.

Thanks Adam. I thought about that, but as far as I can tell, I'd have
to buy Outlook for Windows.

Hi Adam and Ken!
Actually, it is possible to open just the .pst file.
Open the Outlook Settings found either in Control Panels or buried within
the Outlook 2001 folder. Under the Services tab remove the Exchange server
service and add a Personal folder (.pst file). When you launch Outlook, you
won't be prompted for an Exchange connection and you'll open directly to
your .pst file.
Hope this helps! bill

Thanks for clearing that up, Bill.
I've had problems with this in the past, but it might have been due to
a corrupt Preferences file that I identified as causing unrelated
problems.

Bill, thanks much. I'll give it a try tomorrow. I would really really
like to get this to work.

Bill,
I kept getting a "Outlook has unexpectly quit because of a type 7
error" whenever I tried to start Outlook (probably because of all the
fiddling I had been doing before), so I tossed everything out,
including the Exchange preferences, emptied the trash, and started
over with Outlook Settings. It runs the installer, then opens the
settings window - which is empty. I click on new and I'm back to the
Create A New Profile window, which I can't seem to get past, that is,
can't create a profile without naming a server and mailbox, then
testing the connection. Without a profile, I can't create a Personal
Folders File. When I start Outlook directly, I end up at the new
profile screen again. What next???

Hi Ken!
You'll need a profile no matter what, but you just don't need the Exchange
server service as part of your profile.
I think what I did before to simplify this was to trash my preferences as
you've already done and then drag my .pst file onto the Outlook Settings
application. Create the profile, but if it includes anything about Exchange
server, delete this.
Hope this helps! bill
