My brand new iMac had some problems with a very loud fan, 3 times it
locked up black, and rebooting went to a white screen (while
installing Leopard).

I took it to the Apple Store and they installed some updates, and I
haven't seen any problem except the 3rd.

If I reboot, it goes into a white screen. I need to turn it off for
5 seconds or more in order to boot.

I still have 10 days to get it replaced locally if it's a hardware
problem.

What you're seeing is definitely not normal, but from the description
I'm not sure if anyone here can say whether it's hardware, firmware or
software that's at fault. I'd bring it to the Apple store, show them,
and insist (politely...it's not the fault of any of the people you'll be
talking to) that it be addressed.

Rude isn't my style. I do like the style of Apple stores though.

Apparently they're hit-or-miss. I've never had anything but a good
experience at the one by me, although someone on Macintouch apparently
found at least one person at the same store condescending. I can say
that twice the people at this store have gone to bat for me against the
mothership.

Based on my own experience and what I've heard from my clients and
members of the local MUG, I'd estimate that about 90% of the time people
have a good encounter with a Genius Bar employee at tha St. Johns Town
Centre (Jacksonville, FL) Apple Store.

Mine have been good, although nobody knew about CTL-O when I wanted to
find out how to read a bunch of selected .ics files at once.

Just surreal, though. Cmd-O has been the shortcut for the open command
for the whole life of the Mac. I expect they were getting lost in the
details of the question and missed the simple "I want to open a file"
notion.

I've had mostly good experiences at Apple stores as well. The one bad
one was a sales person who simply refused to butt-out of a conversation
I was having with a friend who was contemplating switching. I politely
asked twice to be left alone so we could chat and review the machines,
but the guy didn't get it. He kept contradicting me and it was pretty
clear that he was pushing my friend towards a MacBook, when I knew he
would be better off with (and could afford) a MacBook Pro (heavy Photoshop,
etc).

All became clear when it was time to buy - they had no 15" MacBook Pros in
stock! They had planey of MacBooks, though. The guy was pushing for a
'right now' sale rather than trying to get the customer into the right
machine.

We ended up ordering via the Online Store, which did have the machines
in stock.

Other than that one bad experience, they've been great. I chalk it up
to the individual salesman, not anything with the store itself....and
I haven't seen him since.

And it now appears that I could have done it even easier - by telling
iTunes to sync my calendar.

Not surprising. It is very rare for people to blog about good
experiences.
