I have a G$ with an old "puck" mouse that is starting to fail.

I'd like to replace it with a wired mouse, probably with a scroll wheel.

Recommendations? Ones to avoid?

I've always liked Logitech products. Best thing to do is hit a real
store that puts several out on display and find one that fits your
criteria _and_ your hand.

I agree about Logitech. Try some out. I have recently gone to wireless
USB mice and like them. Fewer chords is better. Not much more
expensive IIRC.

Logitech makes a nice and inexpensive two-button+wheel wired mechanical
mouse. For a little more they make a wired optical mouse which I
personally prefer. No drivers are needed for either.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

My $10 Logitech from Micro Center works fine. You may need a pad if
your work surface is sufficiently featureless (as is mine).<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

If you're running OS X, you probably will need no drivers - I've used a
couple of different USB mice and have had no issues with any of them.

Thanks to all of you for the advice... I'll look closely at those
Logitech models.

I like my Logitech Wheel Mouse - Works great on my 7500/G4 in 9.1 with
USBOverDrive. Probably works just as well on X. Maybe one of these days
I'll get around to trying it and find out :)

Any USB mouse will work. Go to a local store that has a good display
and play around with all the display models. Buy the one that feels
right in your hand.

FWIW, I'm pretty happy using a Microsoft Wheel Mouse Optical. I paid
$20 for it. It comes with some software drivers, but they are not
necessary for MacOS to see and use the extra button and wheel.

Depends what your local store carries. Logictech is fine, Microsoft is
good too, but here it's Macally. Lifetime warranty, 2 buttons, scroll
wheel, works just fine. Depends what you like, too. Now with my new
Tower, I have the good ol'wired Apple optical mouse (how do I know?
because it sez so, right on th' bottom, just like th' keyboard, both
sitting in some kinda clear plastic) Anyhow, IMO, it's a case of what you
can get, what you like, and what suits you best. I had one mouse fail on
me, dropped Macally a line, and no trouble whatsoever.

just my stir of the pot

If you want what is, arguably, the BEST wired mouse, you might consider
the Logitech MX510. Twice the megapixels/sec, twice the resolution,
extremely precise and sensitive. Usually $50, but on sale, with rebate
and free shipping, right now at Amazon.

Or, one that's a new discovery for me, the Kensington Pilot Mouse
Optical. Cheap, at $20, but 800dpi, precise, even lighter than the
MX510. It's silver color is a nice match for the G5 :) Or did you mean
G4? The silver also goes well with my Quicksilver G4 :)

It's a pre-quicksilver (blue-grey plastic) G4. I went to a store and
wound up with a 800dpi $20 Kensington "elite"--so far, so good--a big
improvement on the puck. The longer cord, though, does make me think
that oif a cordless worked as smoothly, it might be nice (unlike the
apple, there's a lot of cord on the desk). Thanks again to all of you
for the help.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->
