Archived from groups: comp>sys>mac>hardware>video (more info?)

Hi Everyone,

I'm a new mac owner, and I'd let to get my Mac set up (for the lowest
price possible, as I'm a poor student) to play DvDs from all regions.
I've lived on three continents in the past five years, and I'd really
like to be able to see all of my movies!

I hate the freakin' DVD regions!!! ARGH!

Thanks for any help you can provide,

Brandon Tingley

At <a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.videohelp.com" target="_blank">http://www.videohelp.com</a> you will find the leftmost column contains:
What Is, How To, Lists, and Other. Under Lists you will find "DVD
Hacks". Therein you will find tricks reported by users to disable
region codes and sometimes Macrovision too. You must enter the
make/model of your DVD player to see if such info is available for your
player. If it is, then you can configure your DVD player to play DVD
from any region. It is totally independent of your Mac. ---Ken

You need to hack the DVD drive firmware to convert it from a RPC2
(region sensitive) to and RPC1 drive (region free), but to do this you
need to find out _exactly_ what kind of DVD drive you have in your
mac: ie what model mac is it and what kind of drive you have, right
down to model an manufacturer.

"I have a combo drive in a G4" isn't enough information, you need to
find out if it's a Toshiba SD-R2212 drive from a 14" iBook late 2002.

If it's an older mac then the firmware hack may require OS9 to run (ie
booting into 9, not running classic) as my iBook did.

Once your firmware is hacked, you need a programme called Region,
which will allow you to manually switch between regions.

Try this page...

....and read everything. Twice. Interferring with drive firmware could
screw it up, so be sure you know what you are doing, but I managed to
fix my iBook DVD with no trouble.

Thanks for the info, everyone...

Unfortunately, I have a Matsushita CW-8123, which has no
firmware patch as of yet (that I can find, anyway). As I don't
have the expertise to figure this out myself, I'll just have
to wait around for someone who does to get around to it.

If you are lurking, please please please get around to it! :)

Peace,

Brandon Tingley
