Recently switched to Mac OS and can admit to being totally lost. Under
Windows 2000 one could just right click on My Computer and rename it. I
know the icon on my desktop called Macintosh HD is a little different
then My computer icon in Windows 2000 but regardless is it possible to
rename the icon for my hd for a mac?

Also Windows had the ability to customize the GUI with themes and the
like, is there a Mac third party app to do this? Can anyone give me some
good sites for Mac OS X themes/GUI hacks?

I must admit I am totally clueless on most things relating to Mac so I
just need some good jumping off places. If you can tell from my posts I
am very excited to now own a mac and can't wait to sink my teeth into
all the new software/hardware.

Perfectly. Click the HD icon, hold for 1 second and release. Now the
drive's name is editable. This also applies to any file

It is possible but not recommended. Some of the hacks available are
know to destabilize the system. I would strongly recommend getting used
to the UI first before you start hacking it to death. Having said that,
I do use TransparentDock (see following post) as I can't stand the
dock's background as it's set by default. I do recall that TD broke
rather badly after a Jaguar point release (10.2.6 as I recall) to the
point where the dock would continually crash and restart. Only through
some judicious use of Terminal was I able to restore a backup copy of
the dock. TD got updated very quickly after that :)

That should be click the hard drives name. Clicking the icon will not
make the name editable.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

Fascinating. Never saw that method before. Alternative techniques
include just clicking on the name (with immediate release) and not
moving the mouse, or clicking anywhere on the file's representation and
pressing enter.

Or edit it in the Get Info dialog. (Select the HD, folder, or file, and
either select File -> Get Info or type command-I. If there's no edit box
under "Name & Extension", click the triangle to show it.)<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

Also, File Sharing of that drive needs to be turned off. File Sharing
locks the name of the drive.

That reply brings the discussion back to the original question,
namely how to rename the computer. This is done in that same
"Sharing" window under "System Preferences" that you turn on or off
file sharing, remote access, etc.

You probabnly have File Sharing on?

I use Unsanity's ShapeShifter. There are themes scattered all overr
the place, and Unsanity has links to most of them.

I'm rather surprised that OSX permits this so easily - I would have
thought the HD is owned by root or some other obscure "über-user".

Doesn't the system rely on absolute path names (including the HD's name)
under certain circumstances?

No, it never does. Because it is Unix. And all Unixes consider the
main HD as / (root), so it doesn't matter to it if you rename the drive.

And you can also get to the Get Info window via a contextual menu.
Control-click (or right-click with a two-button mouse) on the icon.

I tried to run both Reaktor Session and GarageBand shortly after
renaming my hard drive, and neither would get past initialization. I
changed the name back and both applications launched fine. OS 10.3.3.
I've found mention of this behavior only once on the Apple forums.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

Welcome to Macintosh. If the name under the HD icon is selected (one
click) that name will be highlighted and you can type in anything you
want. Call it Fred's dog, if it suits your fancy, and it will still
work. Have fun...TRR
