Post subject: resource map damage???
Archived from groups: comp>sys>mac>misc (more info?)

Recently I sent some 'zipped' files to a friend and he reported he
couldn't open them because Yahoo stripped them. "Your AT&T Yahoo! Mail
Virus Protection detected the virus 'Malformed
container violation' ." He recommended that I use an antivirus tool to
'clean up' my Mac from my end. I did so (with Norton) and lo and
behold(!) after a lengthy scan received the following information under
the heading "Problems encountered":

Eudora Settings.bad
Macintosh HD/Users/dellis/Documents/Eudora Folder/
The resource map is damaged.

Eudora Settings.bad.bkup
Macintosh HD/Users/dellis/Documents/Eudora Folder/
The resource map is damaged.

I have since run the disk utility and 'repaired permissions' but still,
the problems seem to exist. (duh?)...

How does one go about repairing resource maps. Can a 'newbie' do it?

My mac is an imac G5; OS10.3.9; processor 1.8GHz

thanks!

Matt's given you an answer to your immediate problem, but other things
to take away from this experience include:

Don't use anything with Norton in the name.
Don't take at face value ignorant, no matter how well-meaning,
suggestions to clean up viruses on your machine.

It's worth noting that even though his mail service claimed it had found
a virus, the actual reported issue was not confirmed viral but merely
suspicious.

Thanks Matt! I tossed the "bad" files.
Thanks, too, to Gregory W. for his comments on Norton. Methinks I spent
too much on very little. I have removed Norton, completely.

Great newsgroup! thanks to all.
