How do I restore emails after Outlook deleted them while c..

I got the normal question to compress or not to compress to save disk space.
I compressed as always and now all my dbx files were deleted. I restored them
from the trash bin, but when I open Outlook it auto creates Inbo, Sent Items,
etc with (1) behind them. How do I restore my emails!

Has anyone got an answer to this problem (not too technical please)- its
exactly the problem my husband has. He's lost all his sent items on being
asked to compress. He's lost simply 100's of buisness emails.
