Was the sale of Metrowerks x86 compiler technology related to the
fact that Apple chose to go with the Intel architecture?

nokia owns and/or uses symbian (i forget which). to build binaries for symbian, they compile PE exe's and run a tool on the resulting binary to convert it to symbian form.
