I need to give a 6 Gbyte .dmg file to another Mac OS X user.

What tool can I use to segment this file into 2 pieces that I can burn
onto 2 DVD-ROMs, and then be assembled back on the other computer? Is
there
some Mac OS X tool that I can use that doesn't rely on any 3rd
party software to segment or join the pieces?

There's a "segment" option to hdiutil.

man hdiutil

I don't think it's available from Disk Utility.

Look for "DMG scissors" or some reasonable variation thereof. I know
it's third-party, but it does a fine job of splitting a DMG in any
number of pieces. These pieces can be rejoined with a simply
double-click action on the other end -- I recall that there was no need
for having a special app to join the pieces.

The standard UNIX tool "split" is available in the terminal... assume it
works on DMG files as well as any other. Join them together again with
another UNIX staple (ho-ho), "cat".
