Archived from groups: alt>mac (more info?)

I have a Color StyleWriter 2400 which I connected to the serial port of
my 8600.

The paper feed doesn't complete and nothing will print. Error messages
only say things like it's not responding. I noticed the carriage return
doesn't park in its spot on the right side, but stays in the middle.
Also, when printer is on the little green lite is blinking- I only once
or twice got a steady lite here, then only for a short time.

Is there something wrong with the carriage return, or is it trying to
tell me all the ink cartridges I've tried are empty or dry?

Thanks for any suggestions.

Well, it is not the ink cartridge being dry. Those printers do not have
a sensor for ink level. You replace the cartridge when the printer is
operating correctly but the page comes out blank, or partly blank.

Sounds like the printer is sick. Printers eventually wear out. Too bad,
those were nice printers.

You can probably get a used 2400 or 2500 cheap on e-bay, but no
assurance how long one would last.

I would add that you can get a USB PCI card for that 8600. You could get
a combo USB & Firewire card. Then you could use a current USB printer as
well as Firewire peripherals. IIRC, you have to be running at least OS
8.1 for USB and OS 8.6 or maybe 9 for Firewire.
