Someone asked me what's the best server
for a medium sized company with mostly
old OS9.22 Macs, and OSX machines with a
few PCs too. What I like about Windows 2000
with AFP and the very first OSX server was,
that one could name share points as they
saw fit. Tried Panther Server, it forced the
Public/Shared concept that nobody wanted.

I have read that Windows 2003 Server with AFP
works just fine with OS9 users - would you
guys agree?

Really? Funny, we must have had a "special" version then.

In the old days of ASIP under OS8.6 to 9.22, the admin could
call any share point "xx" and it would show up on
the Chooser as "xx". Under OSX, when I last tried it, it
was not that easy for OS9.22 users. There were 3rd party
things you could buy to make it that way. Windows 2000
server - if you install AFP, works just great for Mac OS9 users.

Again, wondering what server is best for mostly OS9.1, OS9.22,
OSX, and Windows clients for a medium sized office doing
work in Quark and stuff - wanted to hear some experienced voices.

We ran Panther Server up till a few months ago, then switched to Tiger
Server. I guess I'll tell my techs that they were doing things all
wrong, and the share points that staff were mounting in OS 9, and 8,
really weren't working the way everyone thought they were. Must have
been a mass hallucination...

OS X Server, either Panther or Tiger, in our experience. We just
recently migrated the last of our OS 9 users to OS X and Classic, and
have a couple of dozen Win XP stations.

Called Dell, they assured me their latest servers with
Windows 2003 server supports old Macs as good as
WIndows 2000 Server did.

My beef was with Panther Server - how it forced one to
use the /public/shared thing as share points. I
Called Apple - they say their new Tiger Server
allows share points like I want and will work fine -
but do not have Raid 5 support at this time.

I discovered http://www.Infrant.com - a new server - don't
have to dedicate a Mac or PC for it!
