I would like to have an item on the application which allows me to
change the language for spell checking quickly instead of going through
the edit-spelling menu. Does anybody know if there is a utility doing
this. This should probably not be too hard with AppleScript.

Right click (or control click) on a text input area and you will get a
contextual menu. Pick Spelling and you'll get the dialogue.

What I would like is a menu item similar to the keyboard layout
switching icon on the right end of the application menu bar.

No, AppleScript isn't the right tool for this job.

Unfortunately, Mac OS X currently does not have a system-wide spelling
checker - at least not in the sense of what you want. It is left to
individual application developers to implement spell checking in their
applications. Some use standard facilities offered by Mac OS X Cocoa
frameworks, while others use their own proprietary implementation.

What I think you want is a system-wide spell checker. There are some
available - IIRC, one of the better ones is SpellCatcher:

the closest thing I see is to activate a multilingual spellcheck, but
while I do have this running on my intel-based machine, it seems the
extra control panel that I used to choose this initially is now banned
for not being intel-compiled. I can't even see where I got it from.

If you are interested and cannot find a way to set it, just react and
I'll try archeologic searches.
