Spike,
Your document is corrupt, as you suspect. Therefore, copying into a new
blank document without the last paragraph mark is a good start to
de-corrupting, as you have attempted.
However, the last paragraph mark MUST be just that, because the last
paragraph mark sits just *before* the invisible "master section break",
which contains about 250 types of document-related formatting. You can't
select before an index.
It's best to do it in Normal view.
To de-select the final paragraph mark I normally key Command-a to select the
document and then key Shift-[left arrow]. But if you prefer to do the
selecting by hand, first turn non-printing characters on via the "Show/hide
¶" button or by keying Commend-8 to make it easier.
Post back if that doesn't work.

* SUGGESTION -- KEEP REVISITING AFTER YOU POST: If you post a question, keep
re-visiting the newsgroup for several days after the first response comes
in. Sometimes it takes a few responses before the best or complete solution
is provided; sometimes you'll be asked for further information. Good tips
about getting the best out of posting are at
http://word.mvps.org/Mac/AccessNewsgroups.html and
http://word.mvps.org/FindHelp/Posting.htm (if you use Safari you may see a
blank page and have to hit the circular arrow icon -- "Reload the current
page" -- two or more times).
