Heh... Same here. I took one look at the non-replaceable battery,
non-upgradable RAM, lack of Firewire port and CD/DVD drive, and thought
to myself "FFS, what were they thinking?!". I also thought it peculiar
they placed it between the MacBook and the MacBook Pro. If you ask me,
it belongs squarely at the bottom of the list! It's way too crippled for
my tastes!

Pretty darn slick PDA.

No, in terms of running software, it's a fully functional notebook
computer. Full screen, full keyboard, etc. What it lacks is upgrade
paths, ports, and an internal optical drive.

It's clearly intended as an additional computer, not as someone's sole
and only.

> What it lacks is upgrade paths,

Not much point, when you have issues like having to go to surface
mounting for the memory, to fit the motherboard in the case. There will
be an industry niche for drive and battery replacement/upgrade.

> ports,

Size constraints. The basics are more than adequately covered.

And there's a USB-to-ethernet adapter, and a USB modem, for them as
absolutely gots to have 'em.

> and an internal optical drive.

And there goes the size...

There is an external drive, if you want it, and if you have another
computer around with an optical drive, you can use its drive.

You don't really *need* one in the Air.

Exactly. Notice that it uses an 80 GB 1.8-inch hard drive, presumably
the same as the one in the iPod Classic, yet there's no option to
upgrade to a 160 GB drive like the iPod has. The 160 GB drive uses two
disk platters and is about 3 mm thicker. I could be wrong, but that
implies they couldn't actually fit the large drive in while maintaining
the same enclosure size.

I agree with that and all of your additional points. Clearly, it's not
the "glorified PDA" the previous poster says it is.

Plonk: Colin Fox-Top Poster. He can't even quote accurately, much less
read a web page.
