"Official" Apple Applications - All - A strange request: I'm running Tiger 10.4.11 on a 466 MHz PowerPC G4 with 1 GB RAM. In the past, I have put pretty much wherever I wanted, but I would like to become more since I fear that some Apple updates are failing..

Applications in Safari and other browsers - I just added If I type into the URL line in Safari or Firefox, both know that they have to open Bwana to process the request. How do they know that? When I installed I just dragged it to where I wanted it, and that..

I would like to be able to monitor my network usage, not just in terms
of measuring how much stuff is uploaded and downloaded, but exactly
what application is doing it when. We have satellite Internet (no,
there are no other options) and are subject to usage limits. This
usually isn't a problem, but every once in a while, we see that in the
span of an hour, we downloaded 99 meg of stuff, yet we didn't think we
were doing anything beyond the usual email and work stuff. How can we
find out what's downloading all that stuff?

I've found a number of applications that will monitor network traffic,
but I haven't found one that tells me what application is downloading
what. Is there such a thing?

I'm running Mac OS 10.4.something. Thanks.

-Annie

There is Little Snitch which has gotten pretty mighty in it's current
Leopard-ready 2.01.

You can certainly watch and be notified which applications are
attempting to make net connections, since they all have to be okayed by
you, or be given clearance. Whether it will actually log such activity
I'm unsure.

Does anybody know if Path Finder logs, or gives access to logs of such
activity?

your router may be able to do this. at a minimum, it should log who
has connected to it (in case a neighbor is using your wireless
connection), but some routers will also track the amount of data going
through them, and some even break it down per lan ip address, port
number (which can tell you which application), protocol (which also can
tell you which application), and even log the urls.

One immediate possible source to check for is Software Update. It has a
setting that allows you to have it download certain important updates
automatically and then let you install them when ready. Since some of
these updates -- particularly OS X and security/QuickTime updates -- can
be large, that bears checking.

The router can tell which computer on the LAN is using it, but I don't
see how it would tell which application on the computer is doing it.
This can only be distinguished by the OS on the computer itself.

you can tell quite a bit by the port number or protocol.

for instance, if you see a gigabyte of data on port 119 or via nntp,
you know it's a news reader, and that substantially narrows it down.
how many people use more than one news reader?

it may not identify the application by name but it offers enough clues
to effectively figure it out in most cases.

I'm not sure it logs but there is for sure an option to have a little
window where you definitely can see every file, address etc. involved,
for each application you have granted access too. IIRC you can try it
for one month.

One of our standard "rules" when we're at this house is to turn off
all automatic updating, which includes Software Update, Microsoft,
virus software, podcasts, etc. So nothing gets downloaded without us
actually taking an action.

At least that's what we thought! Apparently there are things being
downloaded that we don't know about.
