Only the exact same model Mac. You're better off installing from the Mac
OS X 10.5 retail media though.

Well, he used the word "transfer" rather than "install". If he were to
clone the one Mac's drive onto another, it would likely work.

Oh good catch. Yep. The architecture (Intel or PowerPC) would have to
be the same, though.

No, not for Leopard. A Leopard installation on a FireWire drive can be
used to boot both processor types.

Really? I wondered about that and if so, that eases my mind.

My G5 Powermac is a bit twitchy about upgrades and such, so I had been
using my G4 mini to do updates, then cloning them back to the G5. Since
then I've sold my G4 mini and now have only an Intel Mini and the G5.

Just try installing Leopard to, say, a TiBook in FireWire target disk
mode from an intel iMac or MacBook Pro.

Won't work; the installer complains about the target disk being the
wrong type. (Which is why we have to wait until I replace the dead DVD
drive in my wife's TiBook before it can be upgraded to Leopard, it being
the only PPC Mac that we still have.)

Yes, we already figured that out.

Sure. But will it then boot on the TiBook?

OK. Hadn't thought about copying the install disc over.

Are you sure about that? I know it's possible for *some* G5s (there was
a thread about this in c.s.m.s shortly after Leopard came out) but I
doubt it's true for G4s.

Yes, and I'm the one who started that thread. The trick is that the
drive has to have an Apple Partion Map, not a GUID table. The latter
has the limitation to late model G5s, the former can boot G4s, even ones
that you cannot install Leopard onto directly because they don't meet
the 867 MHz requirement. Oh, and to install Leopard onto the APM drive,
it has to be done from a PowerPC Mac.

Right, because you can only install Leopard from an Intel Mac onto a
drive with a GUID partition map. An Intel Mac can boot from Leopard on
an APM drive, though.
