I'm looking for recommendations for a D&D style game that:

* closely follows the current rules of the rpg
* has mechanics that 'feel' like the rpg
* is fun

and preferably:

* runs on OS X

Thanks for your help!

On the Mac, your only real options are the Baldur's Gate series and Icewind
Dale, all published by Macplay and Neverwinter Nights.

Macplay has a value-pack out, containing Baldur's Gate 2 and Icewind Dale both
for rougly $30.00.

The games are: Baldur's Gate, Tales of the Sword Coast (requires Baldur's
Gate), Baldur's Gate 2: Shadows of Amn, The Throne of Baal (expansion pack for
Baldur's Gate 2, *might* be released by Macplay), and Icewind Dale.

If you play all of them, it'll keep you tied up for a year. I enjoyed Baldur's
Gate 2 the most (good story, interesting quests, with characters a high enough
level to get some interesting abilities and some tough enemies). Icewind Dale
is fun, too, though it is more of a traditional dungeon-crawl.

If, in fact Macplay is releasing Throne of Baal, I'll pick it up in a
heartbeat.

Oh, all of these games follow D&D 2nd edition rules, not the new 3rd edition.
Neverwinter Nights, I believe, follows third-edition rules, but I haven't
played it, so I can't say for certain.

Depends on whether you want single player experience or P&P style
Multiplayer:

(BG and IWD follow AD&D rules - mostly :)

- the Baldur's Gate Saga, isometric 2D with stunning background.
It's a great single player campaigne with terrific storyline, partially
non-linear: You define one char and can party with up to 5 NPC you have
to micromamage, each of them with a backstory and interesting
interaction with you and the other NPCs.
BG is for Classic OS, but there's a hack named BG1TuTu that allows you
to play it via BG II, with OS X play and the BG II engine enhancements:
<http://ire.mainecoon.net/>

- Icewind Dale (same engine as BG)
Hackfest and Dungeon crawler, create NPCs at your will who don't speak
with you and have no interaction whatsoeve.

BG II-Throne of Bhaale is official announced now, but neither the two
IWD add-ons nor IWD II made it to the Mac so far. BG II and IWD have
co-op multiplayer (play the single player camaigne with your friends)

- Neverwinter Night (D&D 3.0 mostly, full 3D but not very natural
looking surrounding: Terrasses instead of rounded hills, woods with
abysses allover to prolong your path, a limited texture-set (all
dungeons and all houses look pretty much alike)
NWN has a linear single player campaigne of mediocre quality, you can
choose one out of four NPCs (mercenaries, actually) and a familiar or
animal companion, if your char has this ability).
True DM-style multiplayer over LAN or Internet, several 3. party
online-worlds created with the editor(comes only with the PC release,
damnit!)

If you want to peek over the D&D fence: Fallout (OS 9 only) and Fallout
2(OS X only) are graphically outdated but storywise terrific RPGs with
an intersting char devlopment concept, a dark scifi background and lot's
of blood and humor.

Yes, NWN uses 3E rules. There are some quirks, but it's fairly good.
Pay note to the high system requirements.

Heh. The high system requirements are why I haven't picked it up. Neither my
blue G3-350 iBook nor my frankenmac (PMac 7600, G3-350 upgrade 512 MB RAM,
Voodoo5, Soundblaster Live) can run it.

good lord...have you folks compared NWN's minimum reqs to other 3D games
currently out?

NWN:
OSX 10.2.6 or higher
450MHz G4
256MB RAM
32MB video or higher

This really isn't over the top you know. Most new games utilizing OSX
are system hungry. (so much for OSX making things easier)

My setup:
G4 400MHz
Radeon 8500
@800MB RAM

Runs NWN in all but VERY busy areas like a dream.

Take a peek at Unreal 2003 for a good laugh as far as minimum specs go.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

Take a look at The Dark Sideā„¢ for a glimpse on what the average(!)
gamer's system is like today. Macs, especially iMacs with their scrappy,
not upgradeable video hardware are way below that. The GeForce4 MX/32MB
in a 15" iMac for 1.390 EUR (tax included,German Applestore) is a bad
joke, and the the GeForce FX 5200 Ultra/64MB in the 17" iMac for 1.970,-
EUR isn't much better. But anything faster might need excessive cooling
and would ruin the iLamp's form factor. Oh well, the only chance for a
gaming Machead is a (loud!!!) 1.25 GHz G4 with Nvidia GeForce4 Ti at
1.580 EUR or the new 1.6 G5 with ATI Pro 9600 at 2.250 EUR.

(1 EUR = 1,1683 USD as of today)

You know that first-person and god-perspective games differ in their
needs? Unreal has better AI, way more polygons and demands average fps
of 50+, NWN tags along happily with 25+.

Realmz 7.1.2 <http://www.fantasoft.com/> by Fantasoft is the best RPG I
think, it is mainly a 2D style RPG with a party of 6 character that you
control and it has NPCs that you can interact with with to some degree.
There are a large number of Scenarios with elaborate plots that vary
depending on the scenario. The basic game is shareware for $20 and the
addtional scenarios are $13 each.

The only problem is that Realmz runs better on OS 9 or earlier than it
does on OS X, and on a 68k Mac it runs just fine.

There is also the Avernum Series
<http://www.spiderwebsoftware.com/index.html> by Spiderweb Software,
Avernum, Avernum 2, Avernum3 and Blades of Avernum which are Shareware
2D top down RPGs that allow 4 characters at one time.

These games are basically updated from the Exile Series that came from
the same guy.

Also there is Cythera by Ambrosia Software
<http://www.AmbrosiaSW.com/games/>, which is another Shareware 2D RPG

I hjave to say that Realmz is my favourite of all of the RPGs.
