Since Norton will no longer update Systemworks, I am in the market for a
new disk/system utility.

Which one should I look at?

Disk Warrior
TechTool Pro

I have a G3 with some ghosty problems, which I am having trouble
identifying the cause of. Usually I get some directory errors and after
they build up over time, my system begins to lock up tight. Norton can
fix these, but I want to find the cause. Does anyone have experience
with an old B/W G3 that develops these kinds of problems?

What kind of hard disk setup are you running? Do you know if your G3 has
the Rev1 or Rev2 drive controller? The Rev1 controller causes data
corruption in some situations.

I do not know which rev controller I have. But my disk problems are
fairly recent, only happening in the past 3-4 months.

I have had this G3/450 forever. It only has to hold out a few more
months until I can afford a new G5.

Does it still have the original hard disk in it, or has it been upgraded?

It has the original 4GB drive in it, but it is the second drive that is
giving me problems. A 20GB quantum that I added some years back.

Well, that does correspond with the known B&W G3 issues:

What OS are you running? Supposedly OS X has a workaround in the IDE
drivers, so if you're experiencing this under OS X, it's probably
something unrelated.
