Post subject: Outlook Express version and synchronization problems
Archived from groups: microsoft>public>internet>outlookexpress>mac (more info?)

I am teaching online and I am supposed to set my Outlook Express 5.06
up so that I can work offline and also to synchronize my folders. I
cannot figure out where to do this on my mac. On Windows it is easy.
Can someone help me out?

Also, I am game to upgrade to a newer Outlook Express/Entourage, but
don't know which one is what I need. I am running OS 9, and will
upgrade when I figure out how to load OSX onto my G3 powerbook, but I
do need the offline and synchronization options.

Thanks!

Working offline is easy enough. Aside from the File > Work Offline feature,
you just need to make sure that your dial-up Internet connection does not
get called until you specifically request it.

It depends on exactly what you want - you can either set your Tools >
Schedules > Send & Receive All settings to disconnect at the end of a send &
receive attempt (hence leaving you offline at all other times) or for total
control you could set Remote Access > Options > Protocol not to "Connect
automatically when starting TCP/IP applications".

As for folder synchronisation, I don't believe you're going to find
precisely what you're looking for in either OE or Entourage.

I posted on the microsoft groups for OE, and received a very helpful reply
from you. Thank you!

My problem is that now I am receiving tens of messages a day that are from
storage places that say my message is undeliverable. I don't know what I
did, but how do I get rid of them? I pay by the minute in Italy for
internet service, and this is costing me a bundle. Each "message" is
143-144 K...weird.

How do I stop them? I have tried to "nuke" the posting, but although Google
Groups allows me to log in, it does not allow me to "nuke" the message. I
don't understand why. I am very concerned because I need this account
professionally, and must be accessible. Please help me!<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

Hi,

One of the pitfalls of Usenet is that when you post a message without
masking your real e-mail address, you leave yourself open to potential abuse
as a result of spam-harvesting. Your particular case of receiving sizeable,
seemingly bounced e-mails is not the norm, but I would concur that the
situation came about as a result of your initial Usenet post.

Firstly, you really should use a masked e-mail address when sending future
messages through Usenet (look at my e-mail address as an example).

In terms of the current spam issue, you can set Tools > Accounts > Mail >
[your account] > Options only to download partially messages above a certain
size. That will limit the amount of download bandwidth you need to get
through in order to receive these mails. You could then look at Tools >
Rules to set up suitable antispam rules for your mail account.

Another alternative method, again found in Tools > Accounts > Mail > [your
account] > Options is to allow "online access" which lets you see the
contents of your mailbox (through a new folder on the left of the screen)
before you actually download your messages. That way, you can kill the spam
and just download the messages you wish to keep.

Hope that makes sense, give it a try and see what happens,
