Post subject: wmv won't play
Archived from groups: microsoft>public>windowsmedia>player>mac (more info?)

I recently switched iMacs. I'm having a problem playing .wmv now. The new
Mac is a G3 600mghz booted in 9.2.2. (also has 10.1.5). WMP is 7. I've
looked at all the settings on the old mac that works fine (preferences,
extensions, etc) over and over again. As far as I can tell everything in the
new Mac is set the same as the old Mac and yet it won't run the .wmv
I've tried trashing preferences, cache etc. I've re-installed IE and WMP 7
at least 2 times (IE first and then WMP) but I'm still just getting code.
(When I reloaded WMP I made sure the security was low.) The browser "status
bar" at the bottom of the page says "receiving text file" as it loads the
code in the browser page. On the old Mac it does as it should and brings up
a WMP player. Is something from the X side interfering? It's like despite
being told IE doesn't know what to do with these files. Please help. I
can't let it go, like a dog with a bone.

It might be possible to copy the URL of such pages, and then open Windows
Media Player, go to File > Open URL, and paste in the URL. If that works,
it probably means you need to edit your internet preferences. Here's
some information Corentin posted about that a while back:

The plug-in doesn't seem to pick up that I try to access Windows Media
data and doesn't open the files/streams in my web browser:
- you need to properly setup the Internet Config Database for the file
and MIME types WMP supports. The easiest way nowadays is to do it
through the Internet Explorer preferences (the modifications will be
written back to the Internet Config database for all other browsers).
You'll find all the appropriate settings there:
