There's no future in PPC (except perhaps for machine control -- and
X-Box). When Apple announced that they were dropping the PPC in
favour of the Intel chip, IBM's attitude was, "don't let the door slap
yer hehind on the way out".

Personally, I see the Mac OS ultimately being made available to the
general PC market as an alternative to Windoze -- but that's not going
to happen before a wide array of Intel-native apps are available. I
just can't see Apple ignoring a HUGE potential customer base.

Well, that certainly explains why Apple can't keep up with the demand
for the MacBooks.

Don't believe everything you hear the stock analysts pontificating on.

And increased support cost for Apple.

I have no idea what it means, but it's such a cool "word" (by which I mean
pronouncable sequence of letters) regardless.

iPod, ITMS, and software sales will soon totally overshadow the overpriced
Mac market. The entire pro line of Macs will never re emerge while Apple
focuses on gimmicky midrange machines. The greedy stockholders are
salivating over the potential of the iPod, ITMS, and iAccessories market.
It takes little or no R&D to develop and the middleclass teens to twenty
somethings continue to eat it up greedily. Why dump all that money into OS
R&D when your main customer base could care less about Macs? They want
toys, toys, and more toys. The Mac is dead.

IOW, MS co-opted PPC from Apple much in the same way they co-opted the
GUI?

Between MS, Sony, and Nitendo, IBM will sell so many chips that whatever
Apple would have bought is a drop in the bucket.

Why not? They've ignored it decades so far...

Underproduction is hell, eh? Too bad they can't forecast their market
better...

Then they have to start selling their computers like Dell. Advertise a
$299 computer with free LCD monitor and printer. Then when people come
and order, present them with a bunch of upgrade options so by the time
they check out they pay $1800. :-)

A farmer buys a new Mercedes E Class and is annoyed at the cost of the
optional extras.

A short while later, a director of Daimler Benz buys a cow for his farm
from the same farmer.

The farmer submitted the following invoice:

1 cow (standard model) basic price 2,400
Two tone colour (black and white) 150
Leather cover 50
Milk container for summer and winter use 50
4 taps @ 12.50 50
2 fenders, horned @ 17.50 35
1 Fly swat (semi automatic) 30
Manure accessory 60
All weather hooves 100
Dual circuit braking system
(front and rear legs) 400
Multi-tone sound device 135
Closing halogen eyes 150
Feed 1,250

Total 4,910

BFD. OS X is being installed on non-Apple machines today. How much is
Apple seeing from that? Moreover, what has the bigger markup, the
machine itself, or the CD- (or DVD-) ROM with the software? (And if
it's a direct download, how much overhead is there in that?)

Because they had no alternative. Now they do. Presumably unlike you,
Jobs is a businessman. And it doesn't make good business sense to
ignore it.
